Folks

Rather than spend more money on making the car faster i am considering spending money making myself faster

Anyone know of a good instructor for fast road driving done in my own car (cant see the point in using skid cars etc)

I tried an advanced course, (dog on pavement, tree, car etc) and hated it, felt like i was doing driving lessons again.

I want to learn more about the car not how many streetlights are on

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

foz

The chap you need to speak to is called Andrew Walsh:

See:

http://bbs.sidc.co.uk/messageview.cf...63&STARTPAGE=1 for full info on the courses he runs. He does some stuff at Crail (in your own car), but also high performance road courses as well.

Not sure when he's next in Scotland, but drop him an e-mail and you'll be able to find out.

I'm sure the Audi owners club from Aberdeen also did a session with him at Crail at some point last year ?

Highly recommended

John

I'd be interested in this type of course also. Did the rally tarmac and skidpan at Knockhill but would like to learn how to handle my own car better.
cheers

I can vouch for Andrews courses. Top Bloke and his teaching method is straight forward.

If you do the course properly, just remember to budget for a set of rubber, as the crail concrete is a bit abrasive when you start chukin' it sideways....

Can also vouch for Andrew's courses. Many of the Elise drivers at SIDC events have done at least one of his courses. I have done his Crail courses and they are excellent. On the one I was at there was another Elise and two Scoobys. Was about £100 each and well worth it. I also had a one to one day with him around a variety of unfamiliar Scottish Roads. Again I learned a lot about handling a car like the Elise at speed. Was a very enjoyable and very worthwhile course. His courses are probably the best value performance upgrades available. The only other performance upgrade I have done was better brake pads.

Also had a brief session with him when he was at a SIDC event at Knockhill earlier in the year. Absolutely amazing to see what your car is cacapable of in his hands. You will not regret a day with Andrew.

I did the course with Andrew (1st Lotus) in my scoob.

Well worth it and really shows you what you still have to learn and also what the car is capable of in the right hands (not mine!)
Shows you lots of different techniques in controlling car both on circuit and skidpan. Don't know if he has started again but when I did it a while back he wasn't doing the on public road course.

Better budget for chip stick for the paintwork as well as tyres as Crail has really loose surface in places.

P.S. I actually ended up on the course with one of the Audi guys mentioned above. Enjoyed being passenger in the Audi going backwards off the track at 70mph

Cool

Hi guys,

Earlier this year I talked to Andrew with a view to booking at least 1 day for some members of the Crailthrashers club. He was comming up to Scotland to do the course for the MLR. However the course was cancelled as there were not enough participents to fill a full week. Which was a pity as the guys who voiced an interest had arranged days off work etc in anticipation. Perhaps I could rally up the same peebs again, providing a decision is made at least a week prior to the event as to if the course is going ahead. Therefore enabling every1 to cancel holidays etc in the event of a no go.

I'd be up for this sort of thing too.

I don't fancy Knockhill though. Don't see much point in 'turn in at this cone', 'aim for this one', 'accelerate at this one'

I'd get bored of that after a few laps.

I would be up for it . I did crail with Andrew earlier this year YES I did put quite a lot of wear on a set of tyres but what I learnt was worth it BIG TIME.

I am not saying you will learn everything in a day however you will learn an awful lot about your car. I had just taken delivery of the STi and I was a different driver..

I would be interested in a driving course - we have a set of used (almost slick !) boots for track days - could I use those and save my current rubber ?

An old set of tyres would probably be fine if its is dry. If it is wet then you won't wear your normal tyres mnuch anyway. Its well worth getting the training, it may easily save you an insurance excess. Far better to be able to explore the limits of your car in the reasonable safety of Crail. You can't get too much training and I wouldn't mind a wee refresher as I still seem to have the odd spin at Knockhill.

I have received this

Hi Lowell

We hope to come up to Scotland around February next year. The prices for
Crail are:
£80 for the full day in your own car, assuming 4 people sharing the airfield
and instructor
£135 each for a full day in your own car with only two people sharing the
course and the instructor

The prices for the road courses are
£170 for a weekday date (mon-fri) in your own car
£200 for a weekend date (sat or sun) in your own car

Do you know how many people would be interested if we came up in February.

Many Thanks

I am also getting information from Drivetrain which is predominantly high speed road driving (police class 1 driving instructors)

I will post up any relevant information here

Cheers

I am awaiting info from drivetrain which is police grade 1 instructors for fast road driving.

I think this is more what I am looking for and i really dont want to learn who to throw the car sideways rather fast road driving!

I can get it sideways in the local car park

Mike I am sure everyone is welcome

Hey Foz,

Like u r self bud I`m more interested in the road thing
Getting sideways & correcting it, doin doughnuts, playing avoid the cones n stuff is all done & dusted. What i`d be up for ideally is something that can be bounced off the insurance companies to get a discount on premiums I know the Lotus 1st course is certificated but my insurance (probably like most others) were not interested in giving a discount after that course was done.

Keep me up2 speed with any progress m8

Pete
