Question

as i arrived at work on thursday a large plume of steam began to pour out from under the bonnet of my '94wrx. upon inspection it was the wee black bakelite expansion tank for the cooling system that had ruptured. it was as though the top "lid" had separated from the bottom "bowl" section. the car hadn't been driven hard. only had car a few months and was wondering if this was a common fault?

Red face

Could have been caused by over pressure in the cooling system. I know a lot of people change the expansion tank to the metal tanks as in the newer Impreza.

Cool

Tyler,

Yeah it`s a common fault. Had 2 folks this week alone asking about the conversion to the later tank. BTW I did mine in 2000 or 2001.

Thanks, is it a straight swap for the metal tank or do you need to make any alterations to convert it?

Cool

U need 2 make up a mounting bracket and get some new hoses as the coolant > turbo hose isn`t long enough
