Just to say thanks to John for swapping my 802 ECU for an 801 ECU yesterday. Pity neither of us had more time as I'd like to have had a wee blast in the silver monster sitting up your drive
Anyhow, in case anybody is wondering I had my 802 green ECU swapped for a 801 brown ECU from an MY99.
First of all let me say that I never thought I had a 'bad' MY00. It seemed to have a slight hesitation at around 2.7-2.9 K revs and a slight reluctance to rev past 5.5K through to redline .. but apart from that it seemed quick enough.
Now I have an 801 ECU installed. The hesitation from 2.7-2.9K has most definitely gone. I have not had much chance to test it but I would say it has also cured the 5.5K through to redline resistance. The motor seems to rev easier/cleaner and with less relutance.
Probably the biggest surprise is the engine's characteristics pootling around in traffic on/off boost. The turbo seems far more eager to come on song. Looking back subjectively, the 802 ECU seemed to take much longer to spool up, almost as through it was dragging itself up to full boost. The 801 ECU it seems as though boost is always there when you press the right pedal.
Flat out with WOT through the gears I would say that the 801 ECU has the legs on the 802. Don't expect a massive increase in BHP/torque but I would say the comparison here is correct.
Probably John with the maps for fuelling/ignition etc could explain these characteristics more scientifically.
Well worth it .. would recommend this for any MY00 owners out there .. now to start saving for the TEk3
Doofus.
P.S I have copied this into the relevant posts about the ECU swap in General Technical and ScoobyNet General.

And another thanks from me! I visited John today to swap my 802 for his other 801.
I have to admit I was slightly sceptical before the change. Like Doofus I never really considered my car to have a problem either, and not having driven too many others didn't know what (if anything) I was missing. I'd planned to use the journey there to pay close attention to how the car behaved when accelerating hard, but large numbers of caravans and over-stuffed MPVs kind of got in the way.
Anyway, after an afternoon's use and some visits to roads I know well I can only agree with the comments already made. With the old ECU I could easily tell when I was approaching 6k revs without looking. I've spent most of today looking down and surprising myself that I'm near 7k already. I also don't notice so much of a "step" between sluggish and quick around 2-3k as I used to. I've no idea what these changes translate to as hard figures, but it feels better, and for me that's what counts. I don't want the old ECU back. For all it costs to change over it's a no brainer really, and well worth doing.
Only one thing cast a cloud over my 801 feel-good vibe - John also fitted a tek2 for me to try out Now that was an easy one to feel the difference with, had one of those "oh, we're going quite fast already" moments when glancing at the speedo. I'll be seriously considering this for the end of the year when the warranty's up...
So thanks again to John for swapping out the ECUs, giving the demo, not telling me I drive like a pensioner and showing how well his own car goes (and stops)

I've had the chance to run the car over the weekend now and must say that my initial impressions were comprehensively backed up.
A 'no brainer' change to anybody considering it. I reckon up to 100 mph (on private roads obviously) there would be a 2-3 second difference between 802 and 801.
The most pleasing change is still the marked difference in the 2-3K rev range, all the sluggishness (that I didn't know I had) has gone
Cheers,
Doofus .. funny, John never mentioned I drove like a pensioner either
