Default Steering heavy on my 03 blob uk wrx.

My steering has got a bit heavier than usual and the steering wheel doesn't return to center once i've turned a corner - checked the fluid and that's okay, checked the rack for leaks and none seen and I can see the belt turning so I know that's okay.

I'm thinking maybe a knackered pump but all help appreciated before I change this and if I do need to change it, is there a certain one I need or are they all the same on the newage models?

Thanks.

Just tried that, went for a 5 minute drive and no difference.

This has just happened all of a sudden this afternoon. It was fine when I drove home from work last night.

Could it be a worn belt? I changed my alternator/power steering belt not long ago after it became a struggle to turn. The belt looked fine from the outside but once it took it off I could see that it had loads of little cracks in it, must have been the original belt from 2002 and it had started to deteriorate.

+1 on the belt, mine also looked fine from the top and my steering was a bit heavy and kind of notchy, had a good close look at it and had cracks all around the inside as above, so changed all the belts and jobs a good un.

I'll have a good look at it later but wouldn't something like that usually happen gradually and not just all of a sudden?

Update on this:

Today it seems a lot better, not perfect though but i'm thinking the wd40 on the steering joint left to dwell overnight has maybe helped?

Well I think it was the unijoint so thanks to Turbotits for suggesting it.

I got my missus to turn the steering wheel full lock left to right a few times whilst I soaked it in WD40 and after leaving it to dwell it now seems as good as ever

Dw40 does fix the problem but tends to dry out. Lubricate it with thin oil now it's free.
