Which Scoob alternative - what would you buy
#1
I cant decide which Scoob alternative to go for.
My choices are:
Brand new MG ZS180 4 door
Brand new Skoda RS Turbo
Used Honda Accord Type-R 28000 miles
They all are around the same price and all similar in performance with same insurance group, plus all get good media reviews.
AArrrrg!!! what a dilemma...I cant decide.
I would really welcome you opinions...I know they are no match for the Scoob, but what do you think?

I had an Accord Type R in Pirates Black.
You need to rev hard to release the power. Lots of wheel spin.... Tyres do not last long. well my fronts didn't
A Wolf in sheeps clothing. Very understated V Tec Honda
I did enjoy but it ain't a scooby.

i 'm lucky to have both bug eye and a type r.
the accord is v good got to give it plenty o revs to get it going but goood mpg ,nice spoiler too puts the bug eyed one to shame.
shame your not round here you could of had a blast in it.

Out of three I'd go for the Skoda, purely cos I think it's the nicest out of all of them. Or, you could go for the 150bhp 4x4 version, which you can apparantly still get chipped to ~200bhp and under warranty.
By all accounts the Skoda is a damn good car.
I'm not keen on Rovers (personal choice ) so it would be between the Honda and the Skoda, and from cursory reading (feel free to shoot me down) the Skoda is easier to get instant gains from modifications should you go that route.

If i was you i would go and test drive the skoda and the honda both very good cars, dont know about the mg.
The skoda is very good for the money with its Audi tt running gear and the honda sounds awesome above 7000 revs.

Stratman, sorry to hear your bad news
However now u have the fun job of getting a new car . I have test driven the Skoda, was considering one before going for the Scoob and the Skoda was very impressive. If I couldn't have afforded the insurance on the scoob I would have definately gone for the Skoda, looks wicked in silver and those great 17" alloys All i can say is test drive them all and see what u think. Let us all know what u get.
P.S. I hope the rozzers get the b@stards who frightened your family and do em for a long time

From all the stuff I've read and group test etc. I would definately not get the Rover. Aparrently it's just a disguised Rover 400. I believe there was a group test of these done by Autoexpress last week. It may well be worth looking at their site here.

MG ZS 180
2.5 V6 ZS 180 saloon 4 dr, £16640
The ZS is an enigma in the MG range. The 45, upon which it is based is the Rover that appeals most to the retirement market, the MG ZS model looking a bit uncomfortable in its new sports gear. Sadly the result is a mixed package. The huge rear spoiler looks ridiculous, though ignore it and you'll fined the ZS provides a genuinely entertaining drive. The ride is firm, though like the whole MG range not harsh, and the V6 engines note hardens from a muted purr to a sporting wail with a prod of the accelerator. The power-assisted steering feels sharp on turn in but lacks the crisp feel of the competition, being too light, though the brakes feel like they'd haul the ZS back from high speeds all day long.
Well priced and specified the ZS is an interesting proposition, though it is let down by poor detailing and a rather confused image. Its biggest shortcoming though is the interior, it betraying the MGs age, with the cheap feeling and poorly constructed dashboard detracting from the cars overall appeal.

Why not buy a Scoob Turbo Wagon, remove the scoop and put Sport badges on it?
Still get the driving thrill, but it wont attract much attention from jackers as they will think it is a Sport.

I've just sold my MYO1 WRX PPP for family reasons, not enough space for baby and associated bits and pieces. I decided in the end to go for a AUG 01,BMW 325i sport - I know what everyone on this is going to say!!! BUT it is a superb car and I genuinely prefer it to any of my 3 Scoobys, it's all been said before, build quality, solidity etc.....etc....MAYBE I'm just maturing...Flame suit well and truly zipped up and secured goggles and all...

Stratman, I live in the area and *used* to use the Asda at Pilsworth - surprisingly no longer!
That said, in light of many incidents like this, I drive something a little more "low-key".
If you fancy a long run out in an Octavia 4x4 just mail me, happily take you out for a test run.

In my very humble opinion:-
Accord goes like stink but needs pushing but has minimal legroom for rear passengers if you're a fairly tall driver - cavanous boot though. The dealer even pointed out that the rear legroom is the same as in the 3dr Civic.
Tested the Skoda briefly and if not for the depreciation figures quoted to me by the dealer probably would have bought it - Looks great if you're not a badge snob and goes v nicely.
MG - not bad but not for me!
If depreciation is not a factor for you, ie. you intend to hold on to it for a while then get the Skoda, otherwise personally I would keep looking (slightly second hand upmarket car BMW/Audi etc)
Good hunting

What about the Seat Leon Cupra? Out of the 3 - Accord - you've got to rev the nuts off it, but it's fun, well screwed together, and unlike the other 2, you've got more certaintly over the residual value holding up.

Thanks for all your ideas and suggestions.
After three weeks of looking at every option that would offer performance with low nickability factor I came around full circle and ended up getting a MY99 wagon, in silver, from Robinsons.
Wife and sprogs seem to feel at ease with it being a wagon and its got tons of security, flame throwers and all.
So I suppose now they will buy me pipe and slippers for my next birthday ..lol.

I've driven the MG and it was very nice, but not wild. I been in a Accord type-r and driven various Type-r's and this is the one I'd go for. I've never driven the Skoda so i wont comment.

Glad you are still in the Scooby fold..
nothing wrong with the wagons...
Mine attracts much less attention...
You could always buy a FMIC and a sport bonnet for more subtleness...
Hope you enjoy the new car
