2.0 blobeye sti or 2.5 hawk eye
Hi all decided later this year I want to be scooby owner again always been a petrol head but the recession in the building trade made me cut outgoings and a170 sel passat is my current car it's a sensible family car that has done me well but craving for something special . I would really like wr1 but don't know if I will be able to afford one so if not I really like the blobeye sti and have been told it has a stronger less problematic engine than the 2.5 in the hawk eye , is this the case ? What year does the cost of car tax change is that the 2006 model. Also what problems should I be looking for in either models . Thinking would like a model that has as little depreciation as possible but compared to my 56 plate passat they all seem to be depreciating at a much slower pace . Thanks

Blobeye for me everyday! Although I'm not an expert I have gathered the 2.5 engine is problematic and only any good if it's been forged. The hawks seem to be depreciating more as well, can pick them up cheaper than an older blob. Not many ppl on here are fans of the 2.5 engine. The tax goes to the higher band on everything registered after 23rd march 06, so very early 06 plates and before are £280 per year, after that's around £500

Worth noting that the Japanese market hawk eye impreza continued to use a 2.0 while we were using the 2.5, they're usually fairly resistant to depreciation too.
And there may be some strong 2.5s out there that have be forged by owners.

It's true that the 2.5 does have its problems!! In fact my 2.5 has died! But I'm having it forged ASAP ...... I had a 2.0 sti and never had any trouble at all with it, Both where serviced more often than 10k.... And both driven hard at times... I do think that the 2.5 makes a better road car with the low down torque IMOA... but the tax is a killer on the 2.5 at nearly £500 for the year....

The fact your talking about the 2.5 as being an option means you must have a decent budget , so on that basis I'd buy a nice blob 2.0 widetrack , late my05 or early 06 to avoid the tax hike
Stronger engine , hawk dash etc , dccd and holding the value better

2.5 hawk is a much nicer road car than the blob 2.0, but the 2.5 is a weak point from the factory. If you can find a rebuilt forged 2.5 then def get that, if you dont mind getting it rebuilt get the hawk 2.5, if you dont want that hassel then blob 2.0.
you can pick up hawk 2.0 jdm's, but that takes away the 2.5

Forged 2.5 STI for me... In fact just like the one I have for sale!!
But on a serious note I was also torn between the two and ended up opting for the forged Hawkeye after testing both cars.

i wonder how many fake forged for sale ads we will see on bumtree in the next few years. been to look at a fair amount of scoobs and i am always shocked at the "full service history" being hand written on one sheet of paper from a backstreet garage somwhere.

Thanks guys for all the feed back , i prefer the shape of the blob and with the tax on the 2.5 being so high I think the decision is made like I said it's going to be later in the year unless I get good offer on the passat but doubt that's gonna happen .Is a jdm sti much different on insurance and what sort of budget do I need for a good sti uk or jdm .If I can get decent budget and can find one of coarse would you all go with wr1 over widetrack sti .thanks again
