Group Buy - Crank Sensors.. :(
#1
I feel like I need to arrange a group buy for these things...
Had one replaced at about 80k miles. Then yesterday stopped to fill up at a garage and it wouldn't start . Eventually flattened the battery and left me stranded on the forecourt. I suppose I should have left it for ten minutes to let it cool down a bit. Luckily the chap behind the till let me borrow a set of jump leads and I got a jump start from a passing Audi driver (after we spent 5 minutes looking for his battery . Everything was hidden behind plastic covers). Car started first time after that and has been fine since, but just waiting for the next time
The cars done 145k miles now, so I thought I would have another 20k let before this problem raised it's head again..

They are a piece of pee to change too Nimbus..
10mm spanner and the crank sensor it in the middle front of the engine between the drive belts.. one 10mm bolt head and wires coming out.. looks the same as the cam sensor which is below the oil filler.. remove the bolt and lift it out...
Might get away with cleaning it...?
No point paying to have someone fit it when they are that easy.
My car has just gone over the 100k mark, glad to hear of other cars with higher miles still going strong (well except for the crank sensor) have you had any other problems?

Mmmm actually it might be the cam sensor... I can not remember what was changed last time. Does the cam sensor use 10mm as well? Is it easy to remove? I think I may give cleaning ago. Got to be worth it.
As to other problems, had the clutch replaced, new pads and disks not too long ago, PAS has a leak somewhere and the heat shield is doing a good impression of a load buzzing thing , other than that, no problems
Thanks for the tip

The cam sensor and crank sensor look identical, not sure if they are but they look the same.
The cam sensor is located under the oil filler on the right hand top of the engine near the front.
Again 10mm bolt head and wires coming out of it.. mine were dirty, cleaned them both but made no improvement.. I have an occassional hessitation that comes and goes.
Glad not many problems.. there was another thread with diagrams, I'll try and find it / them.

Cannot find the pictures but the locations I have mentioned match what I was told on here (which is how I learned where they are)
Have a look they look identical and are fairly easy to match.

Thanks. I'll have a look tonight. Got to fill up with petrol on the way home tonight. Knowing my luck, it will refuse to start afterwards. I think I'll park up on the forecourt first to let it cool down a bt then nip over to the pump. :fingerscrossedsmilie:

JGM,
Found the two sensors this morning. Brownie/rusty coulered covers? Both look the same. I'll try taking them out and cleaning them this week end.
PS. My trick at the petrol statioin worked OK. Phew!

Well, today stopped off at a shop to pickup something up and the bl00dy thing would not start!!! Had to wait 20 mins before it would fire up.
I'm going to check the sensors again tonight. I think it's the crank sensor that is causing the problems as this was the dirtiest when I checked them last. I'll have to see where the muck is coming from. I've got a slight oil leak somewhere in that area, so this could be the cause. As soon as that's sorted I should be OK...

I think the only think in that area (although lower than the crank senser) is the crank seal... the dreaded remove belt to change.
I assumed the sensor is sensoring the actual crank turning so wouldn't expect an oil leak to effect it. it must just be spraying off the crank?
Might have to clean it regularly which is a pain..
Good luck anyway.

The Cam and Crank sensors are different, if you have them both out you will see that they are different sizes. I have a 95WRX and i had to change the cam sensor, so it might be that. Depending on where you live i have a spare that you could try to see, it that was the problem

Hi,
I cleand the crank sensor again this morning and that seams to have fixed it for now. I don't know whether it is the sensor itself, or the fact that it's just getting oily. Cleaning it helps, so hofully when the leaks fixed it should be OK.
Thanks for you offer though. I'll keep it in mind.
