The back end of the Impreza is highly unpredictable and if the back does go correcting it only results in a snake.
3 times I've fought with the wheel around roundabouts at speeds well under the speed limit. Once I was guilty on a wet roundabout of jolting the wheel right to induce a bit of oversteer, it didn't end well, wife said "you never had control then did you." I replied "I did." I was telling fibs.
I've fitted a rear roll bar now and the car is far more planted but still no excuse for madness on public roads.

I tend not to agree, my RA has one of the most predictable and controllable back ends i have ever driven. Infact every time I loose the scooby in some shape or form it always shocks me at how easily it is rectify the slide, understeer or oversteer. Driver not machine maybe....

Back end is one that always comes up, and I reckon that most people send the Subaru into a bend at speed, panic a bit, then back off the accelerator abruptly and maybe even brake a bit.
This then causes the back end to go very light, and then the fun begins.
What is it that shocked you about the Impreza?

I'm guilty of having the odd blast away from the lights as is everyone but I draw the line at cornering fast, even on a spirited drive on a desolate country road.

Its more than likely because you are a sh1te driver
Backing off mid bend because you run out of talent is disastrous in an impreza. I used to drive my classic very quickly when I was in the mood, the car always felt planted and under control.

I've driven Impreza's for around 15 years, and my opinion is people think they're invincible when they get behind the wheel.
Back end is one that always comes up, and I reckon that most people send the Subaru into a bend at speed, panic a bit, then back off the accelerator abruptly and maybe even brake a bit.

When I first bought the car twice the back end became skittish going around roundabouts at 25-30mph. I actually tried to casually get the back end out on a quiet damp roundabout to try and get a feel for the car, I had no chance, luckily I was only going 20 or so and it came to a natural stop.
I have the utmost respect for the grip levels now and will not push the car in any circumstance. That said at higher cornering speeds I found the Imp ironically more controllable, I think the car naturally relinquishes grip. :/

Maybe it's lack of experience trying to go sideways on lumpy potholed public UK roads???
Maybe you are all right? I am a sh*te driver, who never breaks the speed limit and also idiot who puts people's life in peril because I drive slowly to a car garage thinking a pad has worn down even though it was just a slightly binding caliper piston.
Would a non-stickers VTA-less Micra that I could potter about in make me more accepted in this community? I could take it on my dad's field and get it going sideways to appease you all?

You can get an Impreza going sideways on tarmac if you want, its not difficult.
Controlling it requires some driving ability though.
Anyway, back to the20mph over steer moment.
What tyres were on the car at that time, because that is most definitely not normal.
Was the road overly greasy?
What time of year was it - winter?

I'm not a brave driver by any stretch of the imagination but a cautious experienced one. I have lightweight wheels on now, the car is 120kg lighter and I have fitted drop links and stiffer ARB the car feels like it would cope with corners now, if I was ever foolish enough to push my boundaries, but it wasn't the case when I bought the car, it wasn't something to disrespect.

The nearest I got to that was a 180 degree about face at the end of Bedford's 1Km straight after I went 5th to 2nd by mistake, doing well over the ton at the time.
I had to catch my breath after that one
I was very fortunate that there was no trackside furniture to hit, and very lucky that I had a passenger on board who had the incredible presence of mind, while I was trying to straighten the car out, to knock the stick out of gear and saved my engine from a severe screamer.
