Default Dodgy or not Dodgy...?

I got an overseas buyer interested in my car...... "oversea" normally would set alarm bells ringing....

What do you think......

-------------------
Hi,Yeah, the car looks very clean and well looked after - exactly what I'm looking for. I had an oem MY06 hawkeye STi 1/2 a year ago , but the previous owner were so careless that engine bearings started to make the noises approximetly 1k miles after I've started to use a car so that's why I,m asking thease questions about condition etc..

The main thing right now is that I want to discuss about You according payment terms and buying thing. I know You mentioned that You don't want to deal with export selling but as I have bought the last three cars for myself from UK I couldn't see a bad point doing it of course in case the seller/owner agrees on that.

My offer would be to transfer You a full amount of money via bank account as pre-payment and only after the moment You will get the whole amount (8k GBP) in Your account, I'll deal the transport company who could pick up the car. In case we can agree on that, I would need the v5 docs from the car and all the history paperwork just to be sure it's there.
I'm not talking about some ****ty western union payments or something which are not safe and usefull, I'm talking about normal UK bank You are using daily so everything in this business goes safe and as should be. That's why I really wanted my friend meets You on 26th to discuss about thease things on Your place so You shouldn't worry that I'm some kind of strange/unacceptable persson.
We can use paypal as well but I wouldn't prefer it for so huge money transfer as there will be a huge money loss to get this money out of paypal account.
There is one company who transfers cash via EU union insured but it would take a time while that cash would arrive to You.

I'm from Riga, Latvia and need to get that car somehow here, that's why it's a bit messy to get clear with that.

BTW, where's the nearest airport from You? I could look weather there isn't some straight flights from Riga to get there by myself.

If its a bank transfer, you could ask the bank to check the details of the account the money came from, with the details he gives you (name, address, date of birth maybe) just to check he isnt using someone elses account fraudulently.

That would be my concern. The crooks always find new ways of getting round the system! Its not unusual for Eastern Europeans buying cars from here as they are so rare over there...tough one! Its not the 'bankers draft' con my dad almost got caught out with ten years ago when the Africans started the pishing scams

Sorry guys but this one has SCAM written all over it in my eyes.

No wonder these types find so many gullible suckers to scam.

Tell him to get on a plane and turn up with the folding wedge, take him to the bank with a burly mate, pay the money in and then give him the doc's and the keys.

Yea I'd say thanks but no thanks.. if he's had engine problems on a previous Scooby then surely if he was genuinely interested he'd be getting a cheap flight over to view the car first, as that doesn't seem to be what he's suggesting then I'd leave it.

PS. Latvia is only about 1400 miles from Dover, so again if he was a genuine buyer surely he'd come to view, pay you cash and drive the thing home, perhaps say that this is the only type of sale you'll accept and see what he says. (he comes over personally, pays cash, takes the car away there and then)

Might be alright, they use uk cars for track or steering conversion... and his friend could pop in as there are a lot of latvians in uk....
Idd say-ask him to transfer to his friend... and him to bring you cash.. easy
Good luck mate

Exactly, serious buyers turn up with the folding stuff, not some elaborate tale that would take up an episode of Jackanory.

yeah as he says above he wants his friend/friends to meet you so get him to transfer the cash to his mate and he comes to you with it, safest way to do it. I wouldnt be meeting them in a petrol station in the scoob though, and bring a mate too :-)

NO NO NO NO NO !!!

There's been a few threads on this type of scam.

Sorry, but if you want to make money give your bank account details to my Nigerian uncle who's got £250 billion dollars waiting to be transferred out of the country.

(PS - not taking the p!ss, but highlighting that this is simply a variation on that sort of scam).

Hi my brother had a similar situation.
He sold his 3 door cosworth only a few months ago to someone from Malta. Transferred funds into his account with only seeing pics of the car:-0 10k without seeing a car in the flesh would not be me!
So I kinda think it works both ways and as long as the funds are in your account it's your money eg transfer to another account.

I had a guy from Germany who apparently wanted to buy my previous car without even seeing it, wanted to pay the asking price but insisted he take the log book which I wasn't prepared to do, the log book needs to be in the new buyers name first, then they can fill the export slip out , I guess if the log book is in your name and they export the vehicle it leaves you liable in some way. I'm no expert but that's my understanding of it...

I'd make this a sticky, personally.

Wouldn't want to see any fellow SN member ripped off.

And there was me trying to kill two birds with one stone.

You've asked for advice op, and you've been given it.

You've made a request, and it's been explained very nicely why it won't find favour with members of this forum. (And note - no-one's abused you for suggesting it).

Got to be honest I am pretty good at sniffing out a scam, but this one has me confused. It is hard to see how he can make it work if using a UK bank account and his email address seems genuine enough yet if it was me I would still be wary.... do people really buy cars like this even if they are from Latvia???

Talk to your bank and see if there is any way he can recall the transaction after so many days... if not then it may actually be genuine as recalling the transaction is the only way he could scam you in this scenario!
