Bought a clocked Impreza

Bought a clocked Impreza
Before anyone starts I didn't check the mileage on the old mot's which was a mistake as the dealer did flash them in front of me to show no advisories etc.
The car was advertised with 118k miles and had a new engine fitted.
When I went to look at the car it had 128k miles on it so I let it slide as a possible typo.
I got home and after a few days I check the MOT history and the car is showing over 180k miles.
I contacted the seller by text so that I have proof.
Me
Hi Adam. I've gone through the paperwork on this car and previous mot's online and the cars mileage is over 180k but the clocks show 128k. Has the car been illegally clocked or is there any paperwork to show this change of mileage? I'm still awaiting that other paperwork aswel. Thanks
Adam
Engine change I will send receipt.
Me
I have checked about clocking under the sales of goods act etc and the car was misrepresented on the advert with a false mileage as the mileage shows the age of the car not the engine and I'm legally allowed to recoup costs of a vehicle with similar mileage. I'll obviously give chance first before going down that route.
Adam
I clearly stated that the vehicle had a new engine put in.obviously mileage would be different. I don't know what you are worried about.
Me
When I come to sell the car myself in a few year the car has over 180k miles legally and mot's won't match. The mileage is the age if the car not the engine.
Adam does not reply after this message he is a dealership aswel and ill not name and shame just yet.
This is the message i'm thinking of sending next.
You have 24 hours to respond before I bring in police and trading standards, this is not a threat, its an opportunity to resolve this amicably before it gets complicated. I dont want to return the car as I like the car. I bought it from your dealership with good feedback but the car has over 60k more miles than advertised.
I have overpaid for a car with extremely high mileage.
I am going to take this further and wondered if anyone has encountered this before.

You live in Penistone
Good luck with getting it resolved though... You're being more reasonable than many other people would be, what's the plan if he agrees to sort things out?

Another fecking retard, not the OP mind.
Chucking an engine in from a car that has done XXXX miles doesn't lower the mileage that a car has done.
Trading Standards, etc, and take it back.

I understand you now spending the extra money as well,I feel for you mate buying from trade is suppose to take the risk away from buying a shed from a private sale,I would definitely take it further as they sound like they are just taking the **** now with the silent treatment.SJ.

I would just take the car back and get a refund.
Its not actually illegal to clock a car but it is illegal to sell a clocked car and claim its the true mileage, even if he didn't know it had been clocked. He doesn't have a leg to stand on, demand a full refund or threaten legal action.
Who wants a classic with 180k on the clock, its worth £500 now. Imagine what it'll be worth when you come to sell it after another 20K.

If the car has really got 180,000 miles on it, then just about everything is going to be worn out and cost you loads to replace over time.
This will turn out to be a money pit and if you do end up getting a partial refund you'll end up spending it all over again of constant maintenance
Get rid. With the help of trading standards if necessary!

I'm not going to ask what you've paid for it but must be good money anyway.
I'd say return the car and find yourself another example.
Maybe on here if you can as there are plenty other good UK2000 in good nick if thats what you really want either that pick yourself up a better spec'd Import.
I find the best thing to do is to buy from an Enthusiast who actually takes care of the car and is interested in them as opposed to someone who is entirely in it for profit.
I've been fortunate enough to not be in this position with buying a car from a dealer and it turning out to be a dog, but I see it happen very often!
In this day and age 90% of people want to pull your pants down in the used car market. Buy with caution!

Call the police. Are u mad. Its a civil matter. And it had a new engine in. Thats y the mileage is less. Listen ive sold in good faith. Does that engine really look like its done more than there is on it. I said once i get hold of previous owner i will forward u the reciept for engine change.
Me
I'm not mad no just sticking to my rights as a consumer. I'm not a silly or daft person and I'm sure your not and you know even when doing a engine change on a car the cars mileage remains the same as the mileage shows how far the complete car has travelled. The replacements engine mileage should be logged on a valid receipt but at no time should the cars clocks be changed. I don't even know where these clocks came from.
Adam
Neither do i. Im sorry u feel this way. And i cant help you. I sold the car in good faith. It was sold with no warranty and sold as seen. If u feel i have beem u fair. I advise you to take further action. Thankyoy
Me
I have tried to be fair and civil. You say you sold the car in good faith but it wasn't as I took it in good faith that the cars mileage was correct which it is not and being sold as seen with no warranty doesn't cover you unfortunately. Selling the car knowingly it had incorrect mileage to a consumer is illegal. This can lead to prosecution by trading standards. I really wanted to stay away from that as you have a business to run. Tomorrow I will be contacting the authorities as previously stated.
