I am pretty sure that the Pro R filters are Pipercross so if yours is in good nick I would stick with that (provided its a panel filter).
Failing that any of the top brands are pretty much the same, down to personal preference really.I picked up an OMP panel filter for £20 & its identical to a K&N & has done me great for nearly 4 years.

In the coming edition of Japanese Performance magazine there will be an interesting feature on a group-test of panel filters...
Conducted at Scooby Clinic, using their Dyno Dynamics rolling road, air intake temperature remained the same (16-17°C) and two power tests per filter were taken.
Filters tested were:
K&N
ITG
Pipercross
Green
Cosworth
Do-Luck
All filters were tested on
a standard 54-plate Impreza WRX STi 2.0-litre, which was originally fitted with a
standard panel filter.
The results? The pre-oiled Do-Luck foam
filter Gave a max BHP of: 297.7 (12.9 BHP
extra over the stock filter). Its nearest
competition giving 10.4 bhp...
Japanese Performance found the Do-Luck filter produced the best
performance gains, throttle response and power curve characteristics. According to actual test data, the best value for money filter is Do-Luck and it also produced the most amount of additional BHP

Newage right?
The Cosworth ones are good.
I ran a Simota one on all three of my newage cars after being recommended them and found them to make a nice rasp and give a little extra kick.
Panels are good for up to around 400bhp but cold air induction kits are the way to go on higher power applications though.

It depends what you mean better.
Less filtration=more air=leaner=more bhp
It also means more dirty air in the engine and running leaner with whatever consequences this may have.
Stock is good enough, just change it regularly. Otherwise a good cotton alternative e.g. Cosworth.
In a filter test posted in NASIOC years ago, the K&N had the best gains IIRC but also the worst filtration properties.
Foam filters are even worse at filtering so don't bother with them at all.

I got a Pro-R Subaru one. Made by Pipercross. I figure as it's a warranty replacement friendly item it's probably going to be pretty good for filtration purposes, and that's what's important right?

I tried fitting panel filters in the past and found no difference. Saying that they were in pretty average cars, 160bhp Impreza and a 170bhp Ford Cougar. I decided that just fitting a new oem one more frequently was a better move than fitting a fancy one that you have to reclean.
