Default Small Numberplate

Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy a small sized front numberplate for the scooby, looking for one roughly the same size as the part on the bumper for it or as close to that as possible

Think they look 10x better with the smaller ones

Got mine from a Google search. I can find the inv if you want.

One word of advice, don't add flags or emblems because the letters look really small. (Guess who did have a flag ? ) Didn't look too bad on screen.

The main issue is the size of the lettering.
I was (would have been) lucky because my reg is only 6 characters.

There is a very useful thread on here somewhere regarding the legal issues - size and font etc.

What I've done is keep the fully legal one in the boot.
If PC Jobsworth says owt it'll be "Oh, sorry officer, I've forgotten to replace it after the show. I'll do it now" and switch them over in front of him.

Here's a useful link: http://www.newreg.co.uk/services/dvl...ic_plate_rules

As you can see, there's a minimum length of plate, governed by the number of characters and gap.

If its an import car it can have bike size letters. If its a UK car it must have full size letters in the correct font (2 options if I remember right). Can go as low as 11mm around the numbers to the edge of the plate, anything smaller and its illegal. Must also have the name and postcode of manufacturer and the legal BS number a symbol on it.

This is the one Rob Day did for me!

100% legal.

Been on there over 2 years now with no pulls or fines and passed 2x MOTs at Subaru main dealer with it on!

That's an advantage of having only 5 characters I suppose, not being funny.

With two more the plate would have to be about 120 mm, almost 5 inches, longer.

As an aside, I didn't realise anyone on here did them.
I'll have to ask before buying anything now

I have the font on my computer so if you send me your registration I can lay it out in CAD and tell you what the smallest legal size would be!

That rule changed back in 1999, your plate isnt legal, sorry.
Basically if you read the rules regarding import plates, its only cars that CANNOT fit a standard sized plate (subaru's can) that are allowed (Evo's for instance only have a slot on the front for a square plate, same with nissan GTI-R's), any car imported in or before 1999 can fit one but after that have to comply with the regs that have been in force for the last 14 years.
Luckily my type R was imported in 1999 so if i wanted to it could be fitted with a square type plate but its fitted with a standard plate, same as my Spec C, both of which are exactly to UK specifications

Tony

I knew it used to be allowed when I had my old Pulsar on small import plates. Oh well.

My car is a UK car with standard UK size letters & spacing. The plate shown in the pic has been accepted by Subaru and the police as legal to UK size and regs.

I researched this a lot and was VERY careful with the sizes.

there is only one size that is legal in the uk and thats not it.

its illegal whether you like it or not, it would be harsh to be fined for it, but the police now have targets to meet and thats an easy target.

i got fined £60 and the above arguement about going to a show doesnt wash as i tried that too complete with standard plates in the boot.

Text from the current legal directive as highlighted on INF104 form:

1. Character height 79mm
2. Character width (except the figure 1 or letter I) 50mm
3. Character stroke 14mm
4. Space between characters 11mm
5. Space between groups 33mm
6. Top, bottom and side margins (minimum) 11mm
7. Vertical space between groups 19mm

Nowhere does it define the overall size of the plate. Just that it must meet these criteria, which mine does!!!!

I agree (which is why I mentioned the extra 120mm for 7 characters).

It does seem a bit of an anomaly though. Why not legislate a standard size of plate ? (Oops, better not give Big Brother ideas).

BrownPantsRacing is correct, I had this clarified when I bought my plate.

The size of the plate is NOT defined, it's the sizing and spacing of the lettering and borders which is.

This is the smallest you can legally have a 7 digit plate, if I had fewer letters - the plate could legally be smaller - just like P7 YTT plate above.

If the overall shape and size of the plate was clearly defined through legislation then all 3 people that bought rover 75s when they were being made would have illegal plates and Rover would have gone bust!!!!!

My car was imported on 2004, and Helfrauds happily supplied me with a small, square number plate, bike sized lettering IIRC.

I bought a 12" x 3" from craigs plates and service was perfect. Totally illegal i know but it looks so much better than the legal size as theres a raised section on the bumper which just so happens to be that size!

Totally agree but it looks so much nicer than the legal MASSIVE white with black lettering one - Les flics just ask if it's legal in the UK to which I reply "of course officer" and that's it - nothing much they can do about foreign cars and you can just imagine the size and location of plates I have on my UK road bikes over here

Just take the legal plate off and stick it under your seat. If you get pulled by police just say it fell off up the road and you're on the way home to stick it back on. You may get away with it for a while. Thing is if you have an illegal plate fitted , there's no talking your way out of it.
