Default Oil Cooler

I don't track my car, and don't plan to, however needing a new oil cooler and seeing the price of standard one's I think I'll go for a mocul type one.

As I don't track it, I don't "need" it but are there any negatives to be had? How much oil do they hold?

What temps are you getting?

By standard do you mean the modine?

The engine is still being built, and yes the standard modine is more expensive than an oil cooler set up. As i understand an oil cooler sandwich plate deletes the need for the modine?

The modine also warms the oil in winter as heat from the coolant will go into the oil. Useful to get the oil working correctly.

Needs to be in a sense that it allows the oil to warm quicker just rotating around the engine, and then once warmed free flows into the cooler and pipework etc?.

basicly it shuts/doesnt open when temps too low, aka on warm up/cold day, then open when temps go up, you can run the oil too cold.

Right now I don't have a standard one lol. New one's are about £180.

I thought so. my commute to work is only a 5 minute journey, so this isn't going to work.

5-minutes is never going to warm the oil to full temp anyway - if I ever use the car for work even 20-minutes is touch and go to a decent oil temp if it's cold out

Lol, it's warmed up don't worry, but christ knows how long it would take to open the thermostat on the oil cooler on tickover .

Why don't you have the modine?

Is it something else that went with the other engine?

IMO, fit the oil cooler, with thermostatic control to get it up and running and see how you get on. The stat shouldn't open on that short a journey to and from work.

If needs be, fit a modine when funds allow.

I've got 2 sitting here Mick, one on a spare block which has a bent pipe, the other originally from the CDB when the bearing span.

I suppose a S/H modine from a good source from a non-blown engine is out of the question?.

If you're not going to track it why not fit a new modine, then if temps are still a problem then fit a cooler as well?

New Modine's are £180. I'm thinking this...£50
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Imp...item3f27310dd1

and then something like...£125
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oil-Cooler...item3c97ab59cb

Cheap cooler but in theory it will never be used unless the oil temps are high, which is unlikely unless I track it,
