Well thats what it says!!

Its the top rated Sporting Car in its B'est used car' section.

It does warn against buying a grey Import or any modified Scoobies - cheaper as they may be. It goes on, stick to UK spec and get the best value performance car you can buy!.

Wise words indeed (although I get flamed for speaking the truth like that!)

Question

Smallfin - no hatred at all, just that they have no history that can be verified and lack certain things that the EU cars have and need see??

Not at all - just that you will have a very limited market wanting to buy it when you come to sell - keep it and it doesnt matter

I was only reporting what was printed for info

People will always have a problem with imports. I had a UK and now I have an import (purchased brand new with an SVA). Would I go back to my old UK car - not a chance. If you want something to cost nothing in deprecation and you can sell after a couple of years buy a 10 year old 1.1L Fiesta .

After a car is three years old the warranty has gone (unless you extend it and I bet 99% dont).

2nd hand would you pay more for a Golf Driver than a GTi same condition mileage etc.

The market is being flooded with UK /Euro spec cars and there a price war out there . So the only cars to keep there money will be the rarer less common Japanese imports [ ]. Comes down to simple supply and demand, dealers dont want 10 cars all the same on theior forecourt, ask any main agent.

Question

Chrisp - I suggest you get a brain implant immediately

The 'rarer' Grey Import worth more than a straight Uk model????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Tell that to Hallmarks in Thatcham - same Grey Imported Imprezas on the forecourt for months on end!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Clean UNMODIFIED UK (ie NOT dodgy Greys) selling well at your local main dealer - the 'REAL' world is out there somewhere - go find it

Pete

Whatever Pete

Just go into your local dealer and ask for a part ex price on a new one and be prepared for a shock. I know I was and even laughed, my old UK 1998 had a FSSH only done 10K and was fairly standard, no engine or suspension mods and had stock silver wheels when I took the 17's off . The dealers are selling high but the part ex price are rock bottom due to the new model and cost of the Euro imports that came in. The UK wanted cheap cars now we have cheap trade ins .

I didnt trade mine to a Subaru garage eventually but got just about book price and it was 20K under average mileage at the time.

Question

I didnt quite get the idiotic ramblings of that Gary chap either?? Coke can?? blah blah RS BBS - why the hell would I anyone want to talk to RS bods??

I come to the Subaru BBS to get some intelligent wind-ups!!

Chrisp - I was only taking exception to your statement that Grey Imports will be worth more than UK cars ... which is clearly wrong in the market of today

Fair enough Pete but personally I think we are all stuffed it doesnt matter what you drive, when it comes to dealing with the trade.

Its like the old antique shop mentality - One window has the sign old scrap brought, the next window has genuine antiques for sale.

cheers

Chrisp - yep you are right we are all stuffed (but no more stuffed that the bod who paid £20000 for a Vectra, say!)

The Scoobie still holds its money, RELATIVE, to 'run of the mill' cars

Nice thought about the Antiques shop - was one called Steptoe & Son?? ha ha - showing my age now!

On the UK cars versus import arguement - they both have their advantages, but I went for a 98 WRX (owned from new in the UK with a full history) and here are some of the reasons:
about 50 more bhp!, climate control, aluminium bonnet and boot, retracting mirrors, electric aerial (do UK cars get this?) rear wiper, slightly shorter more sporty gearing and a higher rev limit, about 50 more bhp! (worth mentioning twice) etc, etc.
The disadvantages seem small in comparison, with higher insurance being the only one I really consider important - a small trade off. How much would it cost to get a UK car up to this spec? Lots, so how can they be a better buy then?

My concerns on buying a Grey would be.

Resale value
Insurance - x2 from Uk at least
Fuel - Having to run octane boost to make sure things are safe or the worry that a previous owner hadn't and what damage had been done.
Resale value - worth mentiong twice.

Steve.

Cool

On the resale point, the grey cars are cheaper in the first place, and this needs to be taken into consideration when comparing resales, greys APPEAR to have a low resale, but in reality i would say they are about the same as uk specs are expensive from new.
Insurance wise i have not found a big differencs.
Regarding petrol, i would run a uk spec on super anyway.
The main reason for getting an import is the equipment and power you get. For example air con, this is standard on an import and probably in excess of £1000 on a uk. 280 bhp versus 210 (or whatever it is), different suspension, more desirable bodykit etc etc the list really does go on.
One reason ( not the main reason)i got my import was in fact resale value. Mine is a sti5typeR (a coupe), it has switchable diff and all sti goodies. In MY opinion this will be more desirable than many scoobies because its so rare and it is sought after.Especially since it will have had a full history and a warranty.
I havent noticed any imported 22bs being any cheaper or less desirable than uk ones
