Ive got a highly modded 2.1 type r so lots of money has gone into it . Ive been having some issues with it getting hot and water squirting out of the overflow. So i took it to a garage today for a sniff test and the result was good news because the dye stayed the same blue colour. So then the mechanic felt the bottom of the rad and said it was cold so he reckoned it was possibly the thermostat stuck shut. I drove the car home and took the thermostat off then stuck it in a boiling kettle for atleast 40 seconds. The thermostat opened about 12mm . Is that enough or should it be opening a lot more ? If i do change it should i go for a genuine subaru one or are the cheaper type ones just as good ?

12mm is plenty could be the water pump or I had a strange one I had the two fans connected up together and they cooled the water that quick the thermostat shut completely and struggled to open again and fans just kept going. Well to cut along story short after changing nearly everything just disconnected one fan and everything was grand

Ok what i'll do is take the inside of the thermostat out so it will then be always fully open, stick it back on the car and then see. If it then gets hot and spues water out then it must be the water pump ? The rad is aftermarket and very small because of the big front mount intercooler. So both fans are always on for the rad as soon as the car comes to a halt.

Is it ok when driving or just when you come to a stop.

It looses a bit of water out of the overflow of the plastic bottle by the rad when the cars moving but looses/squirts alot more out when the car comes to a standstill

I think i'd be trying the water pump l'd be a week typing out what to try and explain.

Sounds like it could be airlocked.

A search on here will turn up posts from me on how to refill it without airlocking it.
SLOWLY does it too....there is NO known way to bleed the system once it airlocks.

Disconnect the coolant pipe that goes from the header tank to theturbo. Disconnect at the the header tank and push a small funnel in the pipe and fill up from there. its a bit slow but theres less chance of causing airlocks
