Parking area hit-and-run
Hey guys
At 19:31 I walked out of the Co-Op in Carshalton and found my front bumper scraped and my headlight washer broken off, this all is on the front driver side.
A bit gutted, but an eye witness gave me the registration of the VW Polo that hit me.
What would be the next few steps to take?
I unfortunately didn't get the eye witness contact details.
How would I trackdown the car in question?
Thanks in advance.

Had same happen to me a few years ago mate. Ring your insurance company to notify them, give the the reg no for the other vehicle and they should be able to trace there insurance who then contact them to ask if they've been involved in this sort of accident. Hopefully they accept they've been rumbled and admitt it.
Hope you get sorted mate its scum like this who think they can get away with it

If they didn't stop or leave a note then you've got no chance of them admitting liability.
Shame you didn't get the contact details of the eye witness as that was your only hope of the police being able to do anything.

Funnily enough it was a little lad aged 7 who lives across from me who got his register number.

Matty similar thing happened to me and the d**ckheads insurance company went to inspect his car which must have been damaged too. I rung the police who also went round to see the car. He had no leg to stand on

When I got hit in a car park the police wouldn't do anything as they said it was private property, in the end my insurance chased them up and claimed against them.
Luckily someone left a note on my car with there name and address who witnessed the crash.
I'm sure your insurance will sort it out for you with your legal advise if they have to.

V888, fill it in and give the reason for asking as legal action.
In the section for how the data will be used state legal action.
I think there's a box where you can explain the circumstances.
It's a fiver btw.
Although the site will probably have CCTV the Data Protection Act will prevent them from giving you any evidence, unless criminality is involved (and then the police have to request it).
There is however perhaps a simpler way.
People are creatures of habit.
The car/owner possibly shops at the store regularly, perhaps even at roughly the same time every week.
Lie in wait

Approach them and say that you have a witness (how did you get their reg otherwise?) and face them down.
(You only have to inform the police is there's an injury and the only criminality would be if it was deliberate).

As far as the police was concerned I didn't think to contact them as insurance here normally do it for you. Plus seeing as I've only had my first ever accident in the UK I didn't really know the procedure here. Sorry that my lack of accident experience didn't kick in, but wasn't really expecting to have an accident last night. Plus the shock of it all had me post my short post above. If I had taken the time to think about the situation I wouldn't have even bothered.
Sorry that I was too busy thinking about looking after my very tired son, trying to get back home and trying to get hold of the right claims procedure.
And in answer to your "phone the police - common sense" jab I can safely say that my insurance company are in the process of doing it all for me. Thus seeing as my common sense got me to phone my insurance I saved myself another call to the police who would not really care about a trivial bumper scratch on a Saturday night when they have "bigger fish to fry".
So actually knowing that my insurance company was only available between Sat 9-5 & Sun 10-4 I used my common sense and didn't contact them until this morning at 10.
