Default Engine Warning/Managment Light

So I went out today to take the fiancée shopping drove there around 30 mins away car all fine.

Coming home and about half way home I gave the car a bit of a blast going to around 5k all fine then on the bypass I took it up to around 6k sounded fine, no hesitation, smoke etc and then as I changed gear the orange engine light came on.

Stopped look at the engine, check oil etc all fine no noises, drove on car was still driving spot on no hesitations not in limp mode and still was pulling fine when I gave it a little blast to check it!

So why would the light have come on seems all fine to me, it's a WRX Bug (UK300) standard Prodrive map, exhaust etc.

Could it be Lambo Sensor or 02 sensor?

Or something worse lol

Thanks

This was the light that came on:

The light could have come on for many many reasons. car needs to be plug into a dignostic machine to read the stored fault code.

Its the only way to be sure why the light came on.

But im gonna guess at the nps being at fault and a missfire code

It could, literally, be anything mate.
Get on ebay and buy a fault code reader, they are only about £10. Or even better, if you have an Android phone, buy the ODB II bluetooth plug-in (£10 as well) and download the TorquePro app. It enables you to monitor anything your ECU can see, including fault codes, and can also reset your ECU to clear any fault codes once youve diagnosed the problem. All from your mobile phone!

Thanks for the replies much appreciated

Ok I will get a fault code reader, any one point me to the right one in eBay.
Unfortunately I don't have android only iPhone so can't get the App to fault read either.

So if its a cam sensor 1) how do I reset the ecu - unplug the battery for 10 mins like most cars? And 2) will I need a new cam sensor.

This was the first time since I've bought the car I've took it over 5.5k

I have a uk300 bug and it happens to mine quite often.
Get near 6k rpm in first or second and it throws the cam position sensor fault up.
Car drives ok and it turns off after 4 starts of the car.
I have tried tKing the sensor out and cleaning it etc, it still does it...

I cant remember the exact code but i made a post a while ago so will look for it.

Edit cel code P0340

Ebay item number 271166043435 is one of the fault code readers I was talking about. I can't post a link as I'm on the iPad and using the app.
Shame u don't have an android phone as the Torque app is excellent for casual observation of the ECU and vehicle parameters.

Disconnecting the battery won't reset the ECU, but that fault reader should be able to do it, otherwise it'll need hooked up to a laptop or such like

Jesus that's abit of a rip off, well I've ordered the ODB fault reader never used one, not even sure what to do or where to plug it in lol.

I hope it is something simple like cam shaft sensor and not a buggered lump.

Pound to a penny it goes out after 5 restarts.........the bug WRX Denso ECU gets a bit confused anywhere near the red line and throws a camshaft position error. Mine has done it since 2002 LOL

Under the steering column down by your right knee is the OBD II port, looks like a small SCART ........plug the reader in there.

Nice one thanks Midlife/Shaun, well tomorrow will be its 4th start then I will stop after 5 mins and restart it, hopefully it will go.
I will still check my car for fault codes as well, noticed a bit if a dump valve noise today so maybe the OEM dump valve is busted.
Thanks for letting me know where the port is.

When checking for fault codes with the scanner check for "historic codes".......the DENSO ECU stores previous error codes as well as current ones. If the light goes out the historic codes are still stored. Then at least you know what the code is / was.

So got my fault code reader today and it's P0031 (H02S Bank 1 Sensor 1 Heater Circuit Low)
So guess I need a 02 sensor then, cleared the code but after 5 secs it came back on again.

Looks like a £100+ for one of those then..

Import car parts, camskill and AS Performance etc should do them cheaper. If you are handy with a spanner then there are a couple of guides on here how to do it by removing the offside wheel etc..

Need to check that the code is for the front 02 sensor first though......

Front sensor has 5 wires. Rear has 4 wires.
Bank 1 sensor 1. Means the front sensor.
Check your wiring, may have been snagged and could be broken wire or unplugged.

P0031 is the Front 02 sensor........ Codes ending in 7 is the rear

Needs looking at or replacing. The Front 02 sensor is a fancy pseudo wideband sensor and cheap non-subaru copies don't work so e-bay isn't your friend.

Are you happy doing it yourself?

Hi there

Bugeye onwards Front Lambda sensor has have 4 wires(not sure where has been fitted 5 wire Lambda, but for sure is not on the Bugeye) and usually is Denso

New Denso Front O2 sensor cost around £80(from Subaru dealers cost around £300)

If yours car has been mapped, speak with yours mapper and he should be able to mapped out this

Thanks Jura, my cars never been mapped, it's only got the original PPP on it.

Also quick question for you Bug gurus.....I want to keep my Prodrive exhaust (as I like the tone) but want to decat it, is it true there is two cats on the newage and if so which cat should I ditch and will I need a remap?

Thanks
