I've had the same prob recently. I chose to buy a wrx longblock for £500 and swap it over. However, in the time i did that, i've seen STI short blocks going for £350!! If i could go back i would have bought the STI short block!
I also made the mistake of replacing loads of gaskets (cost a bomb!) while the engine was out, which was not actually needed. Its recommended, but if you get a low mileage engine you can get away with the gaskets on it. If i could go back i would also think about a long engine with low mileage and save loads buy leaving the gaskets as is (bar the essentials).
You can find decent STI engines anywhere from £900 on, a decent mechanic can swap it in a day easily and charge £350 - £400ish.
You might as well keep the car, because like i have learnt, once you have a scoob, you cant go back to anything else ;-)
