Default Buying a rare Impreza

Hi everybody,

My name's Pol and i'm from the Netherlands. I've been reading for a few days doing some research in search of a Scooby. I'm after a rare classic Impreza, so a 2 door, or a Wagon STI, no sedans budget <10k

I'm interested in development of the value for different 2 door versions over time, and the STI wagons for that matter. There's some limited versions of which there souldn't be that much left (sadly), are these selling like hot buns at the time, or is it even hard to get a rare car sold these days? (let's leave the 22b out of this)

I did have a look at the for sale section, and i got the idea that the cars that i'm after sell pretty quick (low mile, hist., mostly original or properly tuned) and the suspected lemons remain await sale or the scrapheap. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Thanks in advance

Pol

It's a case of being at the right place at the right time too.

You are right, it's very hard to find a decent unmolested Impreza these days.

Goede middag Pol en welkom bij ScoobyNet !

That's as far as I'm going with that. Your English will be MUCH better than my Dutch. (I'm not sure I've got that right anyway, so welcome to the community).

Rare editions are most likely to come up for sale on forums such as this and will be more expensive because enthusiasts appreciate what the car is. The cars will also have been looked after.
(See WLSTi's comment).

If they are advertised elsewhere, such as Ebay, it is likely that either the owner or a buyer will not appreciate the rarity.
(Chocador has already indicated that buyers on Ebay aren't that interested. It is likely that viewers think it is overpriced, not realising that it seems to be a well looked after and rarer model).

A lot of people post here asking for views and opinions on a car they are interested in and I would suggest that you do the same. You will get good advice.

Good luck in your search.

@ Chocador:
Thats a very nice car you have there! I would be interested, but i'm looking at buying no sooner than november. If you haven't sold it by then i'd seriously take your car into consideration, since it's the exact body i love so much, plus a nice spec and for a fair price by the looks of it.

@LuckyWelshchap:
Dank u wel! To be honest i haven't even looked at E-bay for Impreza's, but that's mainly down to the reasons you quoted. I'd prefer a car that's had a good life with an enthousiast than someone who sees the car as transport (which is more likely on E-bay)

To everyone else: thanks for all the reply's, and i'll be sure to get my payment sorted before i place a official wanted advert. I have to say you've got a real nice forum here! Lot's of good reading, like the Damian Harty bit, top notch!!

One quick quiestion: was there ever a Wagon with dccd produced?

Cheers, Pol

Geen problem !

Even if this is missed opportunity, as I say there's never the best time to buy a car nor the worst.
There will always be a 'better' one after you buy anything but equally when you buy you will almost always think 'I'm glad I waited - this is better than the one I fancied last week'.

Best hurry up with the payment as well.
The Pound is on the way up against the Euro.

I'm sure someone will advise on the DCCD gearbox.
I'm assuming that you can drop one in. (Always good to stick your head up, someone will either confirm you're a genius or enlighten you ).

Haha, true about the 'better' one. I had a Fiat Coupe 20v turbo a while ago, and let's just say i saw a few better ones..
Just had a quick look at the exchange rate Pound-Euro and it's still on the good side of 1,20, or bellow 0,85 for your point of view. It does add up on the amount of 8000, a good rate requires 9300 euro, whilst a bad rate sets you back 10k.

I saw some Impreza's on Pistonheads and Gumtree, P1's looked nice on PH. But are they worth considering or is it more allong E-bay's road? And what about any other sites for used cars in the UK? I had a look at Autotrader and saw a nice P1 for 6k at Hurst.

My reading (opinion) of Hurst is that it is pricey but value for money.
Many people post on here about the business.

I would have bought a car from them - but it was no longer for sale.
Result? - I found a far, far, better car (not the same model) a few weeks later, advertised privately (and on here), so you see why I say that there is never a best time, and never a worst one for buying.

I would not hesitate to look at any car from Hurst, given the posts.

And when I leased my Catalunya from a Subaru main dealer they had 2 P1's ready for delivery, and I always swore a P1 would be my next car after the lease was up.

I never got one, for a number of reasons.

But years later I got a Subaru far rarer, and far better.

You will get your dream, and the next after that.....and then after again....

Original lights and indicators now fitted.
I looked at a couple of p1's for strong money and was disappointed at how rusty they were.

This goes along the lines of what I was going to reply with, i'm going to do a separate post regarding this soon after my own experiences, but the one thing you must check regardless of how rare or immaculate a classic appears to be, is rust! It's not unknown (especially for UK cars) to appear mint but are infact getting dangerously rotten. So make sure you don't get caught out.

Regarding rare Impreza's i'm always surprised at just how little a rare model attracts in terms of price and the same goes for original well cared for but not so rare models. With 1 or 2 owner pristine UK cars lucky to make 2k and rare models like the V2 555 I did a separate thread about in this section unlikely to make 3k, or the mint standard RA for sale on this forum (believe still available) at around 4k, which is crazy considering you can't get a decent Renault Clio for that money! And even more so if you look at the prices the Scoobys nearest rival, the Mitsubishi Evo, is attracting, where a dog of an Evo can be around the same as a top Impreza.

I definitely think Impreza's are at the very bottom in terms of prices atm, so a great time to pick up a rare one as may make a decent investment at some stage!

My car came from hurst,my opinion is vastly different from yours.
He made me an offer on it but I would not sell it to them on principal.
From experience I have NEVER sold a car from a forum, auto trader or piston heads.always had success with eBay,mk2 focus rs-£21000 on eBay and sold to a Evans halshaw fird dealership,my BMW 530d touring,£13250 sold to a guy to use as his company car plus countless other cars I have had in the past.
Forums are good for breaking but you maybe don't make as much on the open market.
I am a car enthusiast and my car is on 2 Subaru forums with little interest, had a lot through eBay but no viewings yet but from the silly questions being asked those looking want a brand new impreza which has never been used or maybe I'm too critical and honest?

I was going to send you an e-mail, but i might as well post on here why i'm not that interested in your car. I'd like to see if other, more experienced members, follow the same line of thinking, and if not, please tell me!

With all due respect: I don't think there is something wrong with the car it self at all, but the fact that it's had two owners in under two years (not regarding the reasons for both people to sell it, but just the plain fact that) makes me decide to lose interest in the car. I prefer a car with the last owner owning it for at least for two years or pref. longer, it's something that tells me the owner liked his car enough to maintain it for a longer period of time (if receipts to prove this available). And in addition to that i think the price is to high for a private sale, around 5500-6500 is the range in which i find reasonably good ones. And finaly the lack of an airbag steeringwheel is to my disliking.

Good luck selling your car,

No bother at all,I wasn't expecting you to buy my car as,by you're own admission you don't have money to buy an impreza.
Hurst offered me £6000 cash to buy the car BACK from me so you can guarantee once he's added up his costs of transport etc he would be asking £8000 plus for it so that's what a trader selling them every week who has bought and sold my car twice before thinks its worth.
You can be as picky as you want but the stipulations you have are going to seriously narrow the market, owned more than 2 years,no eBay sales, must have airbag etc.
As the guy said above they are cheap now but are going up in value so it can sit there till I get what I'm asking.
Good luck finding the right car

Exactly my thought there bro! Regarding the numbers these cars should be demanding more money that atm. Add to that the driving experience as a whole and 4 wheel drive in particular (mostly these cars demand high(er) prices) and you pretty much end up with a very good car (despite being quite old) for very low prices. Especially when disregarding two door models, and as i do, look at wagons instead. I don't like sedans, but most people do, since they're the #1 offer on sale compared to the other 2 atm.

Maybe Evo's are more in demand atm. or maybe more of 'em crashed, less left drops numbers and raises prices..
