Default Up pipe

I have a ported and polished up pipe to go on my newage wrx before Duncan remaps it on the 20th my question is how easy are they to change would I be able to jack it up and change over or would it e best to let a garage do it ?

Cheers Sam

Usually the dp has to be taken off, im changin headers and up pipe in the next few days will be time consuming, make sure you get all gaskets required, ive heard of guys splitting the headers so you can swing the pipe past

I've just had a new sports cat fitted so that shouldn't be a problem getting that off but I'm pretty sure my up pipe has been on there all it's life so wouldn't mind putting the other one on ready for my map

There has also been mention that the turbo needs to be raised to get it in on some occasions. Might require a ramp and an extra pair of hands.

Is it worth changing it if I'm not changing my turbo ?

I've got a sports cat, cat back exhaust system, hrc fuel pump, and a filter so is it worth changing it as I'm only looking for around 280bhp

The most popular up pipe is a "Harvey smith trick" (RIP) up pipe now sold by Alyn at as performance.

It is one of the items most mappers will say when mapping that needs to be changed to get more potential along with injectors, fuel pump and more often than not faulty lambda sensors.

Might be worth pming the mapper for his professional opionion.

If you're only looking for high'ish 200's then i wouldn't bother.
Just get the car mapped up with the current mods and enjoy.

what he means is that the new-age 2.0 WRX cars have a "pre-cat" in the up-pipe that can be restrictive............

270 should be doable bud, is yours totally std at the mo circa 218bhp or whatever it is? but with the downpipe decat?

mine is PPP and 240bhp/240lbft. with full decat and panel filter you should see 280-290 from what i can gather

Well standard I think it's 225bhp all I've done is panel filter, hrc fuel pump and sports cat followed by a cat back system, was told I'd see 270bhp easy with my standard up pipe

Yeah that sounds pretty reasonable mate, even if it doesnt quite make that much power wise, it will drive much better

Original Bug WRX was 215PS, seriously crippled not to tread on the toes of the STi and they do well with re-mapping.

I'd stick with the OEM up-pipe with the TD04 turbo you have, keep the new up-pipe in the garage and fit it with your new turbo when you buy it ...............believe me you will, once you start on the WRX you will find it's easy to drop in a VF35 etc plus a few mods and get it easily over 300

My blob wrx hit 290bhp no problem with a sti uppipe in. That cracked and put a scooby clinic uppipe on it. And if your lucky enough im running 298.3bhp and befor it had the uppipe cat took off it ran 298. It was mapped with duncan then tweaked on the rollers later on

Re-read post 11.

With regard to bhp figures, don't get to caught up with what people say they have. 298 on one set of rollers can be 270 on another.
With a few easy bolt on mods and a mapper on top of his game (paul blamir for instance) you'll be amazed at the difference. Bhp figures are nothing but pub talk as in reality they are just rough guidelines.
