HELP PLEASE! CAR CONFISCATED!
Hello,
I have had a bit of a problem last night. I sold my subaru on Wednesday last week but left the insurance running as im getting another subaru on monday so will switch it over.
However I was driving my friends car last night £25k's worth of AMG merc!!) and got pulled over (probably due to me not looking like the driver of a £25k merc lol) and when when they checked my insurance they said I did not have any!!
I have not received any cancellation notice for the insurance (with sky insurance) so why would I not be on the MID?? the cover was paid for outright so i havent missed any payments or anything like that and my policy doesnt run out till next feb.
Please can anyone help with this as they confiscated the car off me and im potentially going to get a £300 fine and 3 points ontop of the other fines!!

ring your insurance i had the same (ish) problem, was a named driver, driving along got tugged said had no insurance turns out the policy got cancelled by the insurance end and they never let my mate know this, so id say ring your insurance yourself, your mate will be able to get it out the pen providing he has full insurance on it and takes it with him hell have to pay a release fee (about 120 ish)now its all gone through youll have to wait till a court date to contest it , i think any way, i got 6 point and 400 fine for no insurance

If you are insured it will be fine, probably a gliche...did you inform insurers that the other car was sold? If so maybe someone ticked the wrong box on the insurance pc,your phone call will be recorded and as long as you have not cancelled the policy you should be ok.

Not sure how the Police database works, but maybe they could only find the new insurance on the car. Having two policies running on a car shouldn't happen, therefore maybe it confused their system.

I dindnt say it was sold, i just left it as will be changing it to another car in a matter of days. the only thing i can think of is the new owner insuring it made it so they couldnt find my policy. they would only check on the car reg and wouldnt even look at the insurance cert or policy num etc..

i hope so, really dont want the 6 points lol. Moley, in your experience how long would a company have to give to cancel the policy? I havent had any cancellation notice or anything and the new owner only insured it on Thursday

Thanks, well I hope thats the case, this has made me at least feel a bit better for now. I know the only way to know for sure will be to call them tomorrow but at least i may sleep a little better tonight.
Ill update tomorrow to let everyone know the score so hopefully people will avoid this in the future :/

If the Police checked with MIB, MIB check the driver & his own vehicle. If it's not on the MIB database then they ring the insurance company the driver states he's with!
If the MIB can't get hold of the insurance company (out of hours etc), & the driver is adamant they has insurance, then the Police must assume the driver has cover & issue a HORT1 (producer).
As Moley says, even if the OP has cover to drive other vehicles 3rd party, the Merc still has to be insured in it's own right!

i got stopped in my works van as that came up on the ANPR as uninsured, lucky for me it was dueing the day so police could check with my boss and with the ins co and yes it was/is insured but it does go to show that sometimes not all cars are on the police/insurance database.

2 things could of happened here
1st) the car cannot be insured twice - so the new company my of notified the old company - but I'd of thorght they would of checked with you first
2nd) the actual car you were driving was not insured - even though you can drive 3rd party that car has to have insurance too. Given the police didn't give the option of the car owner coming to collect I suspect there may be a problem with the amg insurance.
Like I said send me the reg of both cars and ill check for you
