Default Help, car idalling between 1k + 2k intermittently

Morning all,

The car is being odd this morning to say the least, it is revving up then dropping up, drop, up, drop between 1k + 2k

I has been warmed up but nothing appears to be working.

Also, when I first fired it up, it was ticking over at 2k, instead of its usual 1.5k .... any ideas please!

It is on a power fc (without controller unfortunately)

I am hoping it isn't the MAF, but it is an STI99 the most common offender apparently.

I assume that so long as I drive off boost and gently this will be okay to run 20miles to the garage?

I have read some threads saying to run it for 30mins to see if that helps?!

Also worth noting, is that the car has been a bit dodgy on the idle anyway, just this is 10 times worse, before it might drop to 700rpm and rev to 900rpm

I had the exact same problem of tick over at 2k on my v5 sti wagon the day of my mapping session with Simon
JGM plugged into my apexi ecu and confirmed that the maf air sensor had fried!
I had to go to bulldog Subaru in twyford to get a new maf , £124 later it was fitted and within seconds the revs were back to normal with no more issues
Hope that helps mate

It certainly does, and sounds very much like my problem. The more I read about it the more it adds up.

How annoying as I have just throw £2.5k at it this month! Starting to feel bankrupt!

Is it worth trying to clean it at all? I am reading all sorts here ranging from a quick clean to a new item. I think new is the right idea for futureproofing but August has been a violating month!

It is booked in for a proper diagnosis on Saturday now

Actually, whilst I am thinking, can't you bypass the MAF?... That idea is in my grey matter for some reason!

Yeah sounds you are on the same boat as me , having just rebuilt my engine from a spin shell and fitting a 18g turbo, fmic, and all other supporting mods
I wasn't expecting spending another £124!!
When the maf dies it takes a higher voltage on the sensor and there fore I don't think cleaning it would work!
Also to bypass them isn't an option unless you go maf less like alcatek or simtek ecu on the day of mapping

Still won't get rid of the things though will we!!

Looks like it is time to prune the money tree in the back garden again then, as apparently that is where it's coming from!

I knew I had heard of MAFless but a simtek right now is certainly not an option!

Thanks again for the info. I will warm it up tonight then unplug it... apparently you know for sure it's dead, if the car continues to tick over when unplugged.

Meh, who needs a pension anyway!

Thats not true mate. Unplugging the maf when running proves nothing.

Glad you got it sorted, I've just had the exact same problem on my blob STI,I cleaned my IACV with no improvement so I tried a used MAF which made no difference then the coolant temp sensor with no joy, turned out the actually IACV was goosed altogether got a used one off Matty on here and all was well.

Thanks Mick,

I have a pessimistic attitude with cars, usually end up with a happy result! I know for next time now.

Glad yours is sorted too,

Rob
