Default What have I done to my gearbox??

Hello guys, I am now driving a widetrack blob which Ive hgad for three weeks, after my bug was written off by some gay boy in a mini. Anyway, I decided to change the oils in the car, did the engine oil, went to a garage for the gearbox, gave them 4 litres of Motul Gear 300, as I had read its a good oil. Got the car back, and the gear change felt extremly crap, extremly notchy, and I had to try two or three times to get the car into the gear i needed. Checked the gearbox dipstick and it was massively overfilled, read another thread on here in which it was mentioned the motul is the wrong oil, and the correct oil is Redline 75w90 NS, not shcokproof, bought 3.8 litres of this and changed it this morning. The gearchange is now better, but still isnt the way it was before, the oil level reading is bang on the line for full, but its still notchy, feels like metal grinding against metal. What can I do get the oild gearchange feeling back, which was nice and smooth? Any advice appreciated.

I changed my old unkown oil in my widetrack sti to millers crx 75w90 And it made the gearbox alot smoother, i also put some Fuchs titan 90 limited slip diff oil in the rear at the same time and it sorted the low speed/maneuver judder i had from the DCCD. Not sure if it was the diff or gearbox oil that sorted that though as it was at the same time.

Bear in mind the unethical will put thick gearbox oil in to mask underlying problems, so thinner gearbox oil can feel worse but then you are feeling how the thing really is

Had the same problem with the wrong oil. Downshifts into 4th feel like the synchro has gone.
Put in 3 litres of Redline heavy shockproof and all is well again. If the synchro has gone this oil won't fix it though, and it's not cheap.

Its possible but it seems too much of a coincedence, as it was shifting fine before the change.

Which Redline shockproof should I be using? The heavy or light weight? Ive read loads of threads that I shouldnt be using any of those, getting seriously confused.

Speak to Opie Oils directly bud (user: Oilman iirc). Tell them the whole story, and see what they recommend.

Hopefully it'll just be the oil causing your issues! Good luck!

I'd suggest speaking to Alyn AS Performance.

Sorry, only just spotted this TD.
Yes an 05 Sti.
Spoke to the guys at Zen Performance when the crunching first started and their first diagnosis was synchro troubles. After I told them I had changed the gearbox oil only a few days before they said put the right oil in and it might be ok. They advised Shockproof Heavy.
I got mine at a good price, and some more good advice, from Alyn at AS Performance.

Wow man. Hoping you aren't still driving with the wrong oil since the beginning of the month.
