Default It doesnt take much to confuse me - boost solenoid

I need a new Boost solenoid, so have eyed up this baby LOL

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=221254705088&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123
Anyway, its a 3 port but i can only see 2 ports on it, so i ask the seller and he says the 3rd port can be vented to atmosphere or if i want it to vent back into the intake (like the current original setup) i can but the adapter/nipple at an extra £2 or so, cool.

So, my question, why isnt the original vented to atmosphere and am i better off not venting back into intake and just venting to atmosphere like suggested and saving the massive £2 or so LOL

cheers ears

Don't think it makes a difference, whether it's returned to the inlet or not. Pretty sure my Greddy one isn't, but, my OEM one isn't plumbed in.

If you remove the OEM one, it'll through up a CEL.

You need the type of boost solenoid that the ECU thinks it's talking to.......... 2 and 3 ports work in different ways.

That'll work fine, vta or routed back to the intake, it won't make a difference really. It will of course need remapped, even if you have an existing 3 port installed.

I have a 3 port solenoid but the original one, am replacing it for hopefully the above one as on mapping the original isnt coping with the extra boost etc and is stuttery.

so my question or query is really, do i buy the adapter to make the above 3 port solenoid vent to intake or leave it to vent to atmosphere

current original 3 port vents to intake

My Subaru OEM 3 port from a Classic seemed to cope pretty well with all the 18G could throw at it.......

The reason you can only see 2 ports is the pic is a 2 port sol
I know the model you want it looks the same but has the 3rd port on the left of pic ( if it was 3 port / the port on the right would be your atmosphere
This solenoid works fine but is a little restrictive for big power applications
/ I would go with perrin or Grimm speed if this is your aim

Also, just so i can get my head round it all LOL, from this original one, which outlet is not "needed" then as in it becomes the vent to atmosphere, the top one ? (far left)

Don't think anything vents to atmosphere on a 3 port set-up ?

Apparantly it can LOL, the original setups vent back into intake (im assuming the intake chamber NOT air system intake LOL ?!?!? ) but when you fit aftermarket ones for some reason the 3rd port that vents into intake is usually left to vent to atmosphere

Now this is all my understanding from what ive been told when trying to buy the damn thing, im getting confused LOL !

you would think, even aftermarket, a 3 port setup is a 3 port setup LOL

Top pipe (far left) goes to turbo nipple, middle pipe to actuator and the third (far right) goes to atmosphere or intake. It doesn't matter if its to atmosphere or intake.

Swapping to a 3 port just allows better control of boost while mapping.

o.k cheers, so the "vent to atmosphere" or "intake" goes into the air system intake not the intake manifold then LOL, too many intake terms LOL

i`m with it now

cheers

Yes, the intake pipe not the inlet manifold.

It's the outlet on the right that goes back to the airbox. It is acceptable to vent this to atmosphere and is very common when upgrading from a 2-port to a 3-port. It is "cleaner" to vent the very small amount of air from the turbo compressor that will be vented through that port back to the intake where any oil can be burnt rather than vented to atmosphere and, pedantically, there is that small amount of metered air that will then be recirculated, keeping ECU calculations accurate (but really really not an issue in practice).

What MY? I ask simply because we do 3-ports (same as the ones used in the Prodrive upgrades) with connectors to plug directly to the OEM wiring - but so far only for MY99 onwards while I wait on connectors coming in for the earlier models.

For MY99-on, ours is £78 delivered and is then plug and play. Once pre-MY99 connectors are here that version will be the same price too...so more expensive than the one you found, sure, but not too steep I hope

Cheers all :-)

Think i will go for the option of venting back into airbox, just to keep it all clean and to keep the pipe work all together

Just buy a second hand one like the one in your pic, roughly £15.

I did think about buying a 2nd hand one, but as its being remapped again for the 3rd time LOL, i dont want to risk having a dodgy 2nd hand one, as my current one seems to be faulty on full boost 2nd and 3rd gear and dont want to go for the remap to have the same issue etc.
