Default £4000 budget, what would you buy?

I've owned Impreza's in the past but only the classic shape and now I'm looking to move to either a Bugeye or Blob as I'd like a bit more refinement and build quality. I know my money wont buy an Sti and please can people refrain from saying "you wont get much for that" as I know there are some decent cars out there.

Thing I'm finding is that theres such wide spread in terms of prices vs cars. I'm seeing basic WRX bugs from 2k to 4.5k and Blobs from 2.8k upwards.

I do like to modify my cars so I'm not afraid of things like decats, remaps etc, anything I buy certainly wont stay standard but I'm not looking for 400+bhp.

I have no idea what differences there are with the JDM WRX bugeyes that I've seen compared to a UK, apart from them fetching a lot more ££

So if you had 4k and were starting out again what would you do? I dont have loads of money to throw at it on a regular basis so need to work within the budget for the time being. Any links/posts to cars worth considering are appreciated, I'm currently looking at things like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2810892752...84.m1423.l2649

or this JDM

Thanks for the offer Wiggy but I should have pointed out that I'm only looking for something in white, wr blue or black. Red isnt my thing I'm afraid as are the dark blue ones that always seem to have black wheels.

Ah fair play. Well I bid on the WR Blue 2004 reg Blob that I posted and won it for £3200. That seems like a decent price to me so hopefully the seller will respond and I can go and collect tomorrow.

Leaves me £800-1000 for mods so I would say that a Walbro pump, decat, filter and remap are on the cards, then I'll concentrate on brakes, wheels (would love some 18's like the ones on a WR1), and some sti looks (scoop and front bumper).

Hopefully when I get there I'll find it has some mods already that havent been mentioned. Theres 6 previous owners so surely one of them had a tinker with it

I see 121 on the speedo, but that may be a combo of Km's and miles.

I'm collecting it today. If its as described I'll take it as I think £3200 is cheap for an 04 reg but if theres any nasty noises etc I'll be walking away.

Why?

It says PPP so 305 bhp, that's an easy 340 with a re-map...

And it's a dealer, offer £3950 and add fuel !

For 4k you could get a really nice example!

I paid over 1/2 that for my totally standard Bug with Full Service history

Well that blob was a nail. No service history, not boosting properly, both fogs broken, front calipers and disks shot, boot knocking, aircon not working etc. He wouldn't even lower the price I bid, just got all arrogant so we bailed on him. Another waste of £50 in fuel.

If he'd been honest on eBay I wouldn't mind, but he ignored messages and didn't reply.

Still looking with up to £3500 to spend, maybe a bit more for an sti or something well specced/modded

That's ebay for you unfortunately, I don't get what people think will happen when it comes to handing over the cash when a car is blatantly not as described or has obvious faults such as no brakes or not boosting.

Must be expecting Stevie Wonder to turn up and throw money at them.

Hi guys, hope U don't mind me jumping on this thread but I've got the same issue & am looking for something very similar. Need a 5 door for our dog's sake. Just slowly going through the threads on here to get a feel for what to look for in a 2nd hand Scooby.

the only way to be sure is go and look, the op has taken a chance and had a look and the car was crap, it could of been a bargain but it was a shed.

be prepared to spend a bit of time and money looking for the right one, the cheaper your budget the more sheds you will see.

Thanx for that Tommy, the last time I was in the market for a 'proper' car, I had a 5 figure budget & ended up with a cracking VR6 Corrado followed by a Wednesday lunchtime 4.3 TVR Griffith. (An extremely reliable car, surprisingly. ;~)

Obviously a slightly different game this time around!

Where did U find your Wagon, Scotty? Sounds exactly like the motor I'm looking for.
