Question

Hi all,

I am currently into the second phase of running in my JPN spec STI 7. I kept it under 4,000 rpms for the first 1600 kms, had the oil and filter change and now keeping it below 6,000 rpms, sometimes take it to 6,500 rpms. When I have another oil change at 5,000 kms I will look to take it to about 7,000 - 7,500 rpms and then take it to the 8,000 rpm redline (on occasion) after the 10,000 kms service. I am still running on regular oil (20 - 50). May go to semi - synthetic after 5,000 kms oil and filter change.

Ok, although I love my car and the power is tremendos after the turbo spools around 4,200 rpms, I have to admit that it is pretty tame before the 4,000 rpm mark.

Will the car spool and turbo kick in quicker as the car becomes more broken in, I currently have 2100 kms on the tach and I am hoping that in time it the turbo will kick in hard closer to 3,500 rpms vs. the current 4,200 rpms......any chance of this happening????, if not what is the best way to decrese this lag ??? remove cats ??, better induction ??? problem is I am not sure if the aftermarket for the new STI 7 JPN spec is truly tested yet....

At the end of the day I am looking for more low end torque and less lag

Big thanks,
Ray

With more mileage your engine will loosen up and give a bit more power but the turbo won't kick in any earlier.

Fit a downpipe, there usually good for some more torque where it's needed.

Can the down pipe mod be done completely by itself ? I thought there were over boosting issues if any exhaust mods were done to the STI 7 ??

Ray

My STI UK has 8.5K on the clock now (Feb 1st registered) and when it got past 4K it was much better and then it really loosened up at 6K. It certainly revs much more freely now and the 'stogy' feel of the first few thousand miles has gone. It is more what I had expected of the car.

It still spools up at the same places but does not feel as restricted.

Roll on the PPP

Excellent

So you are saying although the turbo still spools same place that the normally aspirated first few thousand rpms become more torquey ?

Ray

Similar type of thing....

I got the chance to drive a mates MY98 UK std Impreza just after he'd taken delivery of it way back in August 1998.

Even though it felt fast, I was amazed when I got my MY99 UK std 6 months ago just how much quicker mine was at lower revs ... before the Turbo kicked in at 3K revs.

I'm sure my mates car would feel the same as mine now, but as he's sold it I'll never know.

After your engine is properly run in, and with a few mods (as mentioned above in this thread) you'll notice a nice difference.

PS. My wife stayed the night in Nassua on Tuesday. (She works for JMC airlines) Don't know where she stayed, but I still envy her ..... and you ;-)

J.

I fitted a Hotpoint Vacuum cleaner flexi hose to the four branch exhaust offtake on my Maxi and I'd say it accelerates to 43.2 mph better than it did last week. Kindest Regards Blutes

Sounds good. I can't wait till she is run in nicely...

So the first mod should be a down pipe to an STI 7 JPN spec for more torque ?? What about over boosting issues ??

Cheers,
Ray

PS: I hope hope your wife had a nice stay on our beautiful island

Hi Razor, sorry to burst the bubble but its not going to be that easy.I bought my STi7 second hand with 10k miles on the clock,it still does bugger all below 4k rpm.I have driven a brand new Sti7 and it does feel less 'tight' compared to that but low end torque is still missing. My STi4 Type R used to pull like a train from 3000rpm.I'm removing the cats next week and playing with restrictors to try and dampen down any overboost,I'll let you know how I get on.However the decatting will have effects on the fueling no doubt. The only real way will be decat and fully mappable ECU.I just wish there was one available...

A three port boost solenoid (as per the earlier cars) seems to be the best simple overboost cure for the decat on an STi7 so far.

Hey Dave T-S,

You know any company that is selling the complete package (full decat exhaust system with solenoid and instructions how to set it up) ??

Cheers,
Ray

I have decatted mine and it makes a world of difference down low in the rev range.

Enlarging the restrictor addresses the majority of boost spiking, and the swap to a 3 port boost control solenoid is also recommended (although I don't get that fitted until next week).

By all reports fuelling is fine up to 1.3 bar.
