Default Insurance valuation

Hi,

It looks like the insurance are going to write my car off so I imagine there will be an argument about what it is worth. What is the book price for the following car? What price should I try and get off them:

2001 wrx wagon with 80K on clock. Body work was good before the accident. New tires. Brakes, timing belt etc all in good nick as the car has been well looked after.

Cheers,

New brakes, tyres, cambelt makes no difference to insurance companies. If I spend £500 on 4 tyres tomorrow the value of my car doesn't go up by £500 - it's classed as a running cost to keep the car roadworthy.

Also books values aren't really what they go by - its market value ie what would it cost you to replace your car with another of similar mileage, age etc. you're best off looking on Autotrader and the like and get some examples of cars like yours. If they offer you £2k and you provide them with evidence that you can't replace your car for that money they should up their offer.

Some of the cheap/budget/internet insurers still pay out on book price, but most do the above

Exactly - about five years ago my Mondeo was written off when I was hit from behind at traffic lights (I say "written off", but damage wasn't much more than bumper and lights!).

Other driver's insurers were Norwich Union and they argued that there were numerous S-reg Mondeos in the classifieds for £700 so they wouldn't pay more. Unusually for me I was 'difficult' and refused to agree so ended up with £800. And bought a Scoob!

But Norwich Union were just plain unpleasant to deal with.

Cheers folks,

Finally got liability settled and I'm agreeing a valuation of car. They have said £2850 but I want full book price? Anyone got any idea what it is for a MY2001 WRX with 90K.

Also they are suggesting £750 to buy it back as this is the salvage value they'd get for it. This is about 25% of the value given. Is this normal.

Finally I am told I need an MOT to put CAT D back on the road. Is this right?

Cheers

Dan

Take the £2850 and forget about the car. Im very surprised they even offered that, book price definately wont be any higher. Will get yourself a nice bug wrx for that now.

Cheers,

I think I might get a little more. I plan to buy the car back but they are talking about £750. Is this normal?

Default Spraying and undersealing

Hi folks,

I got my cheque yesterday for my Cat D write off. car valued at £3200 and £800 to buy it back so I got £2400. I plan to hang onto the car forever now.

I am going to spend £500 for quarter panel being straightened and painted and 2 bumpers and door being painted. The guy said he could underseal also for £100 which might be a good idea as I am keeping it.

Is there anything specific I need to get done when it is undersealed? Are arch liners better off coming out?

Cheers,

Dan
