Default Bugeye WRX top speed???

As title chaps. Just curious, what's the max speed a bug WRX will achieve. Ie 5th gear bouncing off the limiter.

My old Accord Type R could do 154mph.

I'm pressuming the Subaru could do more in a tuned state (lets imagine it's on a front mount too )

70mph legally

112 if JDM and still limited.

May be faster than the Accord Type R, I can't confirm, but from what I've read if they were both flat out on the Autobahn, the Scooby would go bang first. (Subarus not liking sustained top speed)

had mine flat out legally autobhan. could not get the speedo to go over 149mph. mines 239bhp with big scoop and spoiler. i recon the scoop was costing me that 1 mph lol but also it was at 6000rpm peak power. so wouldnt be able to pull anymore. was on 18" rims if it affects the speedo ?

scoobys are ok at top speed with a fmic, its the top mount that causes the issue

I had 140 showing on my blobeye WRX ppp when on an autobahn. Revs were at 5600, so 'technically' another 1400 to go. However speedos are fairly inaccurate at that speed so was probably mid 130.

I've not heard anything about impreza engines going pop at sustained high speed. Surely a top mounted intercooler is getting plenty of air rammed in via the Airscoop??

I got told by a few tuners after 100MPH the top mount stops getting air as it travels over the car. Front mount needed if you wish to speed for long periods of time.

Over 100mph+ the scoop is pretty ineffective, the air is deflected away too much by the curve on the front of the bonnet and charge temps rise quickly. Sustained autobahn runs on a tmic is a great way to bust a scoob engine.

I've had 145mph indicated from my bug wrx with ppp. So closer to 135 i expect, the dials are way out at that speed!

Speedos have to overstate speed otherwise manufacturers would get in trouble. Normally 60mph on the speedo equals nearer 55-56. Add another 90mph then surely it'd overstate by nearer 8-9 mph. Just my opinion

I'm just tryna get to the bottom of an argument. My mate has a focus RS, I was quiet surprised at how torqy they are. Mine only has a front mount, ind kit, an a back box. 2002 bug.

Off the mark upto 45 50mph, the scoob has it, but as the mph quickly goes by... So does he.

Mines going in for a "hefty" tune up next friday. An the question was asked... What will it top out at?

Good question lol, I've never seen or heard of people maxing there scoobs out? Even on here

I know the Lichfield type 25 will do around 180mph on a 6 speed I think.

But what will the five speed top out at? I'm never gonna take it there, the WRX bottom end an rods are made of chocolate at high speed apparently.

Cheers guys

Now why didn't you tell me that 2 years ago, would have kept your back seats empty for more beer from Brugge!

My max in my 2002 WRX when running around 370 on std internals was a GPS registered 232kph (144mph).

However it didn't end well!

I hit 220kph (~136mph) in 5th around the 5,000rpm but I backed off. It felt as if it wasn't anywhere near done at that speed and the acceleration up the top is actually a bit scary

Top speed would be no different in a higher powered car, It is limited by gearing. That probably is the max anyone would get with the 5 speed box.

I had my blob off the clock* (160), so probably about the same as you in reality.

Wow, really sorry to hear that bud what went?

As mentioned above, it's the gearing that limits the overall speed of the car, not the power. I have gps footage of a classic uk wagon doing 155mph at elvington raceway way an there was still abit left!

As ive said, I'll never take it anywhere near, there's no need

It's my brothers E90 M3 cab I'm gunning for

But as the original question, I was just curious. Much appreciated on the responses guys

Just hope she holds up now, with whats gettin fitted its touch n go lol

Tommy, what kind of failure is often seen on cars running sustained high speeds with a TMIC?

I have to say I was not aware of this issue!

My old 04 remapped blob would go off the clock @ 160 and still pulling, i never had any issues at sustained high speed crossing europe and would be at 100+ for a good portion of my journey, but not on a hot sunny day, more like 4am in the morning when it's nice and cool and the roads are clear, which probably helped a lot.

I got 144mph (GPS recorded) on my 2001 bugeye PPP WRX wagon many years ago. however, the car drones really loudly due to the shape of the front of the bonnet - the first time it happens you'll screech to a halt thinking you've broken it!

It's been answered in the thread already? Intercooler not getting enough air.

You're sharp!

Which leads to what? Loss of performance? Overheating engine? Blown turbo?

Heat and lots of it. Charge temps rise, oil temps rise and ultimately detonation.

Interesting.

I'm wondering it that might have had anything to do with my Spec D going pop. I know the 2.5s are well known for HG but that thing about the intercooler not working well at speed would seem to make sense (or just be very coincidental).
