As far as i know on the road there is no number set in stone, It kinda comes under `Anything changed from OEM` could be deemed to be illegal, For an SVA test its different as that is a test to put a new car/build/import etc.. on the road, This differs from an MOT test for instance and on the road is different still, It all comes down to the tester and if its a VOSA tester he say its wrong....change it. I once had an advisory on a MOT for a noisy exhaust, I asked what to do and MOT tester said nothing leave it as it is and i`ll give you an advisory for it next time if you still have it fitted
Chuck some wire wool and a bung in it until he`s tested it and gone
Then get a resonated center to quieten it down a bit

Method of Inspection:-"During all parts of the emissions test relevant for the vehicle, assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise. Note: For vehicles not subject to an emissions test, the engine should be revved to around 2500rpm or approximately half maximum engine speed if this is lower."
Reason for Rejection:- "A silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition"
that is what we testers use as a guideline bit of a joke really there is no set guideline for the mot so i dont see how they can void your currunt mot cert...... friend of mine had a preducer for a insecure batt and was told to get a mot station to sign to say it had been fixed...... its not even a mot failure lol

I got tested @ 116db a while back and was fined £80 and told to get it changed, The officer was a grade A **** and kept asking if all the mods had been declared on the insurance (which they had).
After reading into this someone said they cant do me as subaru did not publish any info regarding a 96 jdm wrx's db levels

It might have been mentioned but it has no relevance to your situation unless your car is having an SVA test rather than a noise pollution(sec 59) test
PS, The track at Elvington, York has a DB limit of 98db now

When I had my old classic WRX with a straight through exhaust it failed its mot to which was expected. When I looked down the failure sheet apart from silly little things they also failed it the db level. When I asked what they were on about, they told me that because it wasn't standard it was then too loud and that they would fail it again if it wasn't changed.
I thought they were taking the michael and called VOSA. They told me there was no limit and it was up to the mot stations discression.
Hope you get a decent bloke tomorow and not one of those ar5eoles that are about

Most harleys and other bikes are stupidly loud so much so that you can feel the sound vibration on your chest. If that can be legal surley they cant pull u for any impreza exhaust
