Default Help with whirring noise

Hi There,
Got in my 02 bug tonight for he first time in a while as the wife always takes it and on start up there was a whirring/whistleing noise. Gets louder with more revs. Opened the bonnet (it's dark out) but it was clearly coming from the front centre with the drive belts. Belts felt pretty tight but wasn't sure where to satrt with it (when it's light) Is that the alternator in the middle? Could that be making the noise or is it likely to be somethnig else in that vicinity.
Also would you keep driving it (left the wife driveit) in the meantime?
Any help very welcome

It adjusts the belts tention. U will need a new one basically. Or it could b a pulley on alternator or other pully there.

OK are they dear or an easy fix?
And will it fail causing any damage?
Would the actual alternator make this sound?
