Static is caused by you sliding out of the seat to get out, I get it all the time, if you are careful it doesn't happen

Also you shouldn't close the window by the glass!
You will push the glass out of true... not a major issue unless you like lots of wind noise and postential leaks into the car.
Not a fault of Subaru, just of frameless windows in general.

I get them really badly, but always have done. My 205 was bad, but my MR2 is worse.
Sometimes so bad that the better half can hear the crack from the other side of the car, and I have seen blue shots before.
It honestly really hurts as well

I get them too - even closing the door with the glass doesn't seem to work as the car has now learnt to zap me through the key when I lock it.
Best bet is to let the wife get out first so she gets the shock

I used to have this problem with a VW Golf. Sometimes I would get out of the car and no shock, I thought great then as I walked passed the front the bugger got me. It made people at work laugh as they watched me sneak around my car trying not to get zapped.

Depends on the footwear as well.
Adidas classics are a right bitch I can tell you
On one occaision I'd got out of the car, avoided the zap only to reach back in to get something out of the centre console. It zapped me from the door pillar through my Tshirt onto my nipple, my reaction was to jump back - hitting the roof with the back of my head. Girlfriend found it amusing also...

I don't think this problem is unique to scoobys, I've certainly had this with other cars particularly in dry weather. I found that grabing hold of the door positively (no pun intended) rather than gently, seemed to give a larger area to disapate the charge and no shock; a bit like grasping a nettle!
You could always try one of those hang down static dischargers that touch the road and supposedly cure travel sickenss too (probably come with a free pair of furry dice)....or just drive into the garage door before getting out to earth the damn thing!

LOL @ SWRTWannabe
Mine has also started doing this. Sometimes forget not to have my finger on the metal of the key, and think I have got away without a shock, then wham!! as soon as I go to lock the door.

I thought this was due to me being highly charged
Its happened on every car I have ever owned at some point or other, though my Scoob gives me a zap on most days. I avoid by closing door with my arm, but then the bugger usually gets me as I open the boot or something. I once tried "earthing myself" on the garage wall and that gave me a nip too
Yorkie (glad to hear its not just me)

And I thought it was only me!!
Gets bloody painful at times. You SURE that grabbing the door before putting your foot on the floor works???
I use a local cash dispenser regularly and I'm even getting scared of that. If I escape the car the damn cash machine gets me when I start to enter my PIN!!!!!!
Agree about the footwear too!!

I get electric shocks of any type of car. It really hurts, I quite often see blue sparks.
The funniest electrical thing though (well catflap finds it funny) is that I set shop alarms off, you know those arches on the way out of shops - It's embarassing!

The only way is to buy some of that bendy copper pipe from the plumbers merchants and screw it to the bottom of your car - make sure it scrapes along the floor when you are in!! result!!

I too get the dreaded zap! I know about holding onto the car or bodyshell while getting out but forget most of the time. Worst time (pre scoob) was when id given the seats a clean with fabric cleaner! Man! I got some right bolts for weeks until it had calmed down! Never again will i do that.
Best trick though is to get yer mate by touching the tip of his ear just after youve got out of the car. Quite amusing! We used to do this when I was at school (many moons ago!) by running round the library rubbing our shoes on the floor! Ah memories! ;-)

thank pie - i thought it was just me - thanks people!!!
i think it's made worse by wearing the adidas (mistake perhaps) and then skwirming around in the drivers seat getting the dislok on... i then get out and WHAM either on the hand or whatever - and my ear once!!!
thought i had escaped yesterday, then the front door handle... WHAM!!! scooby you little b*&^&%% you!

If you wear shoes with insulated soles, such as trainers, then instead of discharging static through your feet to the ground you'll discharge through whatever you touch first i.e. the car. Best bet is, as mentioned earlier, to hold the door edge when you step out of the car.
