Default No MOT required ??? WTF !!

So today I received the usual letter from DVLA saying my impreza tax is about to run out....blah blah blah.... (Gonna sorn it anyway so pi55 off DVLA)

Was reading the letter and at the very bottom is said, "from 18 November 2012 cars made or registered before Jan 1st 1960 now no longer need an MOT"..

Seriously ??? What's that all about, surely cars that are 50+ years old are even more in need of an MOT. No tax I can understand but MOT, come on that's the test which makes sure the bloody car is safe for the road. Sounds absolutely crazy if you ask me. Cars of that age spend most of their life parked up and cars of that age absolutely hate being parked up. I know first hand what happens to classic cars when they are not used, I had a Bristol 603 (not 50 years old I know but close enough) and that was a pig after sitting for 6 months. Brakes had seized on and were useless after they finaly moved. I've also got a 60's ogle which hasn't moved for a year, dreading getting that out from the barn.

You seem to forget, our lives are controlled by jobsworths who have little or no idea of reality!
When you consider a 50 year old car puts out more pollution in the 5 weekends during the summer when it's brought out, than a modern car does in the rest of the year (assuming you haven't de-catted it of course!), it shows how stupid these people are?

I remember the Mini based Ogle well!

The DVLA's official view on this is that cars of that age are owned and maintained by enthusiasts who have the correct knowledge and skills to keep the cars roadworthy.

They know this as they have the stat's that show how many cars of any given year fail an MOT.

Those stats mean squat, I own a pug 306D that should never see the road again but sails through the test with flying colours
