Do you guys get this much? I pull casually up to the lights in my new MY02 WRX. Then this bloke next to me in a Vectra SRi starts giving me these looks, revving his engine etc. I really have no interest in this sort of thing, but what gets me is that these people really think it's going to be a race.

The kind of AWD traction scoobies get in 1st and 2nd from a standing start will beat most cars I reckon, but these sri,gti,xsi,type-R etc. types just don't seem to understand that 4 driven wheels is so much better than 2!!!

Of course I burned him, then slowed quick as we weren't on that major a road - but afterwards felt slightly embarrassed. Next time I'm going to try harder to ignore the ba$tard.

Do all WRX drivers get this sort of thing (I'm quite new!)- and how best to handle it?

ummm yeah thats half the fun!! What do you expect the Scoob attracts this sort of attention. Like it or not. lets face it its not your run of the mill sedate little run around.
But yes your right loads of people expect a race at every traffic light... dont think that because you have an Impreza they are seeking to impress you with there rep mobile. It is likely that they do this at every chance with every car on the road.
I think you have two choices try and remain sedate and avoid being intimidated. or burn off every McRae wannabe.
Personally I have no probs with similar performance cars doing this thing at the lights i.e. cossies, TVR
But had an experience with a white transit trying to do this I got a bit worried and turned off to lose him

Dave R,

4 wheels is better then FWD, but nowhere near as fun and challenging then RWD.

Dave,

Play it cool dude. Rev your car as well, keep looking across....then when the lights turn to amber, do nothing, and then pull off slowly when green.

Me and a black Evo had a comedy moment when we both pulled up at the lights, looked across, nodded to each other, lights still on red. The road converged to single carriageway after the lights, so it was going to be tight. Lights went to amber....green.....we both sat perfectly still waiting for the other person to pull off Talk about an anti-race...the people behind must have thought we'd both broken down

Hi Dave,
Other day I was with my mate Rod. Had a 911 Turbo 2 pull up next to us. He kept giving us glancing looks over. Rod being Rod let rip the lights in his Vauxhall Viva(450 bhp mind you). We almost had him up to 80, but his top end turbo kicked in and got the better of Rod. Afterwards we flashed him and he pulled into a layby. Just by chance there was a truckers Cafe run by an old flame of Rod's- Nellys caf its called. Invited this Porshe Pansy for a good old traditional greasy slap up. He loved it!!!! Told us he'd never had a race with a Viva before but would respect them from now on. Told him about my Sport and how I was modding it. Hes going to meet me next month for race!!! Anyway will tell you all about that soon.

Not quite a traffic light grand prix scenario for me, but yesterday I had been following a Porsche Boxster down a piece of road minding my own business (as opposed to trying to prove my car is quicker than yours, etc...), and as I went to pull off to go in to a side road the chap started to do the w@nker sign at me! I have no idea why, but hey, made me laugh!

LOL - traffic light grand prix.

Should have seen the Bucks meet on Sunday.

7 scoobs in formation (2 wide) pulling away from traffic lights onto motorway roundabout.

Must have been heard for miles

The funny thing about the 7 Scoobs in Bucks was that whilst we were waiting at the lights a police car passed in front, suddenly clocked us and then nearly ran into some inocent motorist on the roundabout exit. LOL.

I got burnt at the lights by a fiesta Mk1 with a couple of mingers in.

The thing is i knew they were going to go for it but then i would look like a tosser trying to get the better of them in their piece of sh**!

You have to learn the ways of Mr Myagi and know that you would **** all over them given the chance and they know that too!

If you raced everything at the lights then u would lool like a fool. I will only race cars worth racing.

Actually come to think of it I will race any tit who tries it on (apart from bushpigs in Mk1 Fiestas that do not have any headrests!)

Especially BMW or Merc fatcat drivers who think they own the road because of their 46" belly and piece of crumpet next to them.

GRRRRRRR

Rant over!

There's always someone here in a beaten up XR3. I just ignore them now.

Mostly...

Have been known to toy with them a little, then let the turbo cut in

I think of it in terms of whirlpools in the petrol tank now

Wink

I was waiting at the lights in town early one morning (nought around) and in the other lane pulls up a Neon lit Escort 1.4L estate and behind him Nova blacked out windows 1.1.
Both were reving up ready looking for a race... the escorts body rolling from side to side with every blip of the throttle...the lights went to amber.. the escorts clutch dropped... the car did a sort of screach and bunny hop....the lights go green..... the Nova is now level with me watching me intensely...... but catches the wheel on the kerb nearly breaking his wrist. LOL

I waited the till the next light change till the two accidents waiting to happen got well away from me I most have made thier day them burning off a Scoob.

Hardly anyone tries to race me, I mean what would it be like if they lost? Not really something you'd want to boast about down the pub either way:

"Oh yeah, I blew off a Skoda from the lights!"
"This Skoda out accelerated me from the lights!"

Even better now its badged as a 1.4i, makes for a peaceful life !

just got a civic type R (212 BHP), bearing in mind my scoob isn't quite standard (260+ BHP), the civic is very close and at 80, theres nothing in it...plus it has a better top end and 6 gears.... still I love the scoob and as I can't be in both cars at once I can't tell which is the faster....
(I expect some heated replies to this...but all I can say is I am impressed with the civic even though I've had a scoob for 3 years...)
....watch out all you red light racers, for an H Reg Nissan Sunny GTI-R in the Stevenage Area...seen him leave a P1 for dust with his 400 BHP....

I was going up the M11 followed by a 911, so I thought I'd open it up to get past the traffic in and slot in and let him past, as he was obviously wanting to tool it. Thing is ,as I open the scoob up I'm pulling away, and as I pull in, I notice it's only a Boxster - twin tailpipes so it's a 'S'. Now I thought they're supposed to be faster - so I followed him and began to catch him, even though he was twatting it.....but then I noticed a loud schreeching sound coming from the passenger side- it was the wife. Well I was taking here to the maternity unit for her 20 week scan at the time, but Boxsters aren't as fast as I was led to believe- and my WRX only had 2k on at the time, so it was still tight!

Agreed the new Civic Type R is an awesome piece of kit. It probably has more HP to the wheels then a stock UK Turbo, and more top end. Well left alone, especially after 80.

Thumbs up

My favourite is to let the guy get the jump at the lights, stay behind him, and then watch the look on his face as I pass him on the outside at the next roundabout.

Imagine his surprise as an 'estate' disappears infront of him.

PS. If the roundabout is wet ... it's even more fun :-)

It's hard not to take the baite, but I always try to think when I see some nutter - "let them pass and have their accident somewhere else". This seems to help clear the red mist that I am sure we all get from time to time.

regards, Mark.

Every time I drive to Sheffield,it's the same scenario.Travelling along a dual 40mph carriageway doing 40ish,Nova/XR2 etc come flying past, get to roundabout, they slow down and I don't and go past them.On the straight they come past again.Repeat until I get there.
Before I entered the world of AWD turbos(GTIR)I had a Renault19 16v-and whenever I saw something like an Evo or an Impreza I'd try and get them to go for it,not because I thougt I could beat them but because I wanted to see them boot it.It was an Evo IV doing just this that persuaded me to convert to Japcrap. As opposed to French crap.

I agree with skid! You have to pick off the small un's as well as play with the big boys. I'll race 1.3 Nova's (only of conditions are safe, etc to do so) just so they (and me) can see how much quicker the VTS is. I also love nothing better than to be thrashed by a faster car.
