Help! What year is my Scooby!?

This may seem like a weird question, but does anyone know what the correct reg of my scooby should be? (It's an Impreza STi V-Ltd with the black dials, not the white ones)...
When I bought it recently from a private UK seller, the DVLA told me they couldn't say exactly when it was manufactured; because they didn't know what month it was in '97, they've got it listed as a 97P. Is there any way of finding out what month it was made, as I'd hate to miss out on having an R reg!
Has anyone got any ideas???

If you check at the bottom of your seatbelt there should be a white tag, this will have the date the belt was made which will only a couple of weeks at the most before the car was built.
As to P or R reg you will have to prove the date of registration in japan, If that date was after august 97 = R reg. To do this you will need either the Japanese Deregistration Certificate (you should never buy without this as it proves the car was not stolen in Japan) or the Japanese service book which you take to the Dvla and argue your case.
Chances are this was already been done by the original importer as he would have got more money selling it as R reg than a P reg.
