Default exhaust options.

hi,ive recently fitted a 3" h&s backbox to my car.it is mated to a full turbo back 3" decat and it is fookin loud!if i used a resonated centre would it massively reduce the noise?ive come to the conclusion that a resonated centre will not be enough to make it a sensible noise level.so......
can anyone recommend a backbox that is true 3" and fairly quiet?
but hopefully nothing to raspy?
any suggestions would be appriciated.not looking to spend a fortune, just want something to tone the noise down a bit, thanks.

hi,too far for me matey,i like the sound of the h&s but it just so loud, its ok on motorways but for normal driving through towns/villages its borderline rediculous. what style of backbox is the cobra one you have?

the jetex looks quite nice but it would mean i would also have to replace the centre section which i dont really want to do as its brand new,do you know if jetex do a 3" backbox that is the normal length and will bolt up to a normal centre section?(as it looks slip jointed, not a bolt up flange?)

matty,do you know much difference in noise levels between a non resonated centre section and a resonated one? is it minimal or does it actually reduce the noise levels by quite a bit?
how loud is the tornado box?

A resonated section does quieten it down quite a bit mate but it ofcourse depends just how loud it is to start with. For instance, you could fit a resonated centre to a Nur spec and it would still be crazy loud.
The tornado box does sound nice, doesn't drone at cruise speed and can be quiet when just pottering about. Open it up and it comes alive though.

it is bugging me slightly as i do love the sound of the h&s,its aggresive, just a bit too loud,im going to try the resonated centre section first and see what happens,if its still too loud i may take you up on your offer, would you say the tornado is any quieter than the h&s?
when i had the 2.5" h&s it was almost too qiuet so i thout the 3" would be ok.....
a bit of a shock to the system,i started it,sounded nice, tickled the throttle a little whilst stationary and omfg!

I suspect they are all slip jointed, but it may be worth contacting them for a custom box?

I would be tempted at either having a custom back box made to suit your needs (as there's been a few threads where you're trying to find that 'right' sound level), or maybe try a track back box by the likes of Revolution or Cobra.

Centre resonator just helps with the cabin drone. I found the tailpipe size affects the sound too. I have a 4" tailpipe on my 3" system that replaced a 4.5" one. It's a tighter note and quite deep (both Cobra btw so too loud for yourself).

the daft thing is,there dosent seem to be much cabin drone at all,it just seems very loud on normal driving,it sounds great when you plant your foot down, just the overall sound level is a bit much.im hopeing the resonator will reduce the volume a bit?

In that case you just want a more resonated/baffled back box with a smaller tailpipe. Job done.

It will, we just fitted something similar to this ---

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130600158740?redirect=mobile

--- to Carls (thunder8) car. After de-catting his system he found it just too loud and couldn't live with it. Fitted a resonator like the one in the link and it did make a good difference. Don't get me wrong, it won't transform a Nur spec into a Prodrive exhaust note but may well bring it to a level you can live with.

However, the easiest route is to just fit a quieter rear box.

ive also found that some quieter rear boxes tend to be very raspy, and i much prefer the note of the h&s.

You may well be right mate, that doesn't look like much of a resonator....
Think your either gonna have to -
1..live with it
2..fit a different rear box
3..fit a resonator like the one in my link.
