Biggest problem would be if the OP didn't fill the filter with oil and keep topping up over about 10 mins. Many don't seem to realise you need to do that.
OP- you need to get it to a specialist - if it is a big end, prepare to part with some serious cash to put it right!

Fact: That engine was on it last legs. Regardless of oil change procedure it would have died....just it may have lasted a couple months or so longer.
What you need to find out is why it was on its last legs.
For example: Was it low on oil before you drained it; if it was that may lead to a clue.
Its so unbelivably common for owners of cars to never bother to check the oil levels between services, I suspect this has probably happened to this engine at some point in its past. Especially when knowing it was overdue an oil change points to a prior owner who is somewhat negligent/ignorant when it comes to maintaining their car.
*ps I've never bothered to prefill the oil filter or remove the crank sensor. My engine never blew up...oil was changed every six months on the dot too.

I always fill the oil filter before putting it on have done with every car ive had over the years so angry right now saved up my hard earned money to buy it then a simple oil change has led to this no doubt a bottom end rebuild or a recon engine

If the Oil Change killed the engine, then the Oil Change isn't to blame ... if that makes sense?
The Engine was about to fail when you bought it - return it and get your money back.

Yeah i cant see how an oil change could effect it like that but hey i never had a subaru before i have changed the oil and filter and rocker cover gaskets on my mates sti i know how to change head gaskets, cam belts, clutches, gearboxes can take engine out etc but i have never taken a bottom end apart before i have been in contact with the old owner about it (sold as seen) its got fsh up 98651 miles from what i can tell that was the last time the oil was changed it has 117703 miles on the clock i checked everything over before i bought it off him as well all i could find was a part worn tyre no way id pay £3300 to fix it could get a recon engine for that kinda money just really pi**ed off about it

And what Mickey Mouse dealer would that be!!
It's one of the biggest load of bollox on these pages, disconnect the Crank Sensor for a normal Oil Change ....... if that was needed then you should do it every morning when the oil has drained into the sump - do you do that? Nah ... didn't think so!!
I could, just about, agree that it may have some justification if the engine had been rebuilt ....... but ONLY then!

I certainly wouldn't be putting a 5/30 oil in a Subaru with nearly 118,000 miles on it!

Warwickshire mate, but they would collect a car for engine work like that (as will other specialists too). I've always used them for any serious tinkering with my car and when I wanted a forged build.
A bit of advice: don't chose the specialist based on location or price alone. This is going to cost serious money to fix properly, so you need somewhere that does the job right first time!
The fact that somewhere was local and cheap will be of little consolation if you subsequently have to get the car sent further afield and more expensive to get the job done properly!

was it a private sale or dealer? if dealer then sold as seen means nothing.
Also new 2.5 bottom end used to be something like £1700 (dont know current costs though)
