Even better ~ Harry was selling C8 UFO ~ no mention of it in this months mag ~ has it gone? Dunno. LHD, but it is luuuuverly and already has a "tech-art" (from memory ~ could be wrong) rummmmmmbbbbly-exhaust on it, tracker fitted etc etc etc......
And you'll be safe in the knowledge that it's never been taken on track, thrashed by any journos or been driven at "de-banke" angles through the same corner a gazzillion times for Gus Gregory to get a nice powerslide shot.....

Have no direct experience, but EVO figures are 0-60 4.5, 0-100 9.2!!!! i.e much faster than any Scooby you care to mention. I have read that they are ferociously fast, and pretty tame to drive considering. Buy one if you can afford it - you will probably not find a faster point to point car anywhere, cept maybe the new version...

How does it drive compared to our cars
Extremely well for a comparatively heavy car, no area where it falls behind the scoob, superb feedback (though not as good as a 993RS ) very composed, great grip. Not quiet as 'point and squirt' as the impreza more 'am I here already? ' It is a supercar (albeit more GT-supercar) rather than a cheap, fast sports saloon. Different league - build quality, grunt, handling etc etc.
and will it take the strain of 10k miles per year?

Will I notice the power difference?
OH YES - pulls better from standstill, and once you hit 50mph she just rockets away. Don't forget most magazines managed well sub-4secs to 60 (3.4 the fastest IIRC), and 0-100 in around 9secs Thats 40% faster than a UK Scoob, 20% faster than an top STi/MAK - AND the acceleration doesn't slow until you hit the wrong side of 170 - Don't test drive one unless you can afford it
Also, is it a bitch to run? Servicing etc?

I'm dead jealous mate, if I didn't have 2 sprogs I'd definitely have had one by now *sulk* .
Great car by all accounts. 996's are alot cheaper to run, Porche have made decided to make servicing and parts alot cheaper, but as said above you have a minimum 2 services a year already so may not be that much more.
I say you get it whilst young n beautiful, and swap with me when you need a load lugger every now n then

I would say you have to look around very carefully and make sure you get a good one as the costs involved are truly frightening!! Servicing or other wise. Many consider this to be the best 911 ever made and it was the last of the originals. The changed it all with the 996. The interior, the engine is now water cooled and the pedals are the way they are in most cars. As long as it has been scrupulously serviced and maintained you should be ok, but if you see one you like get some one who knows what they are doing to look at it for you as it will bite you if you buy a duff one...

The last air(oil)-cooled Turbo 4 - it's the car Impreza owners should dream about...
Well, at least I do!!!
In many ways, the drive train is just like the Impreza's, flipped 180 degrees. Even has a centre viscous diff ;-)
I came across one at a set of traffic lights just three days ago, and no, I didn't attempt to drag race him. Instead the owner rolled down the window and we proceeded to have a nice chat about each other's cars!
(Incidently, he showed a great deal of respect to my Aus-Spec WRX .)
The sound, shape and power is something else.
If you can afford it, buy it. The air-cooled cars have a good reputation for reliability and the build quality is the finest (mostly hand built too!)

The 993 is regarded as the best 911 - and their reliability is great.
As with *all* the turbo Porsches - maintenance can cost the earth - turbo rebuilds for examples are looking at the thick end of £3k............
so with regards to this comment :

Harry Metcalfe the EVO Magazine Owner ran one (a left hooker) as his long termer, so I would grab a load of back issues and read his reports.
Highlights off the top of my head would be, single figure fuel consumption( something you've probably experienced already )very high maintenance costs that have already been detailed here, but above all they were always full of praise and amazement of the ability of this car.
It's a different league of car you would be moving to. Try a 993 rs before you buy, best car I've ever driven

My direct experience with the 993 turbo goes only as far sitting in one ($hite pedals like any "classic" 911, cabin on the cosy side), and listening to it start up and idle away at Stratstone Porsche in Wilmslow - sounded MAGNIFICENT If my girlfriend hadn't bullied me into a £30K max budget, and persuaded me that we needed 4 doors, I'd have seriously considered one instead of the evo
From previous porsche experience, budget for some big bills. Steven Sutcliffe's article in autocar from about a month ago on his experiences of running his 964 Turbo made very amusing reading
Good luck - from what I've read the 993 turbo is only one of a handful of cars which could be considered an upgrade from your Mak.

Awesome awesome cars......
But, in the recent Supercar v Bike test, the EVO 6 (was an RS admitedly) was lapping quicker than the Porsche...........
But as an everyday car, reckon it's streets ahead.

993RS IS the best 911, but it is very harsh as an eveyday commuter. And with only 40-odd RHD models made, even 10k per year will **** the resale value.
Friend of mine ran one a couple of years ago. Paid £75k for a mint 7k miler, added another 7k in 6 months, became frustrated as he couldn't 'use' it properly (it is a pure out and out race car on the road that doesn't like pootling around on the commuter run), went to sell it, and ended up loosing £18k
993RS - Stunning car, VERY live lightweight tailhappy RWD, but definitly a weekend/track plaything.
For my money for a fast but 'use it everyday' supercar - there is none better than the 993 Turbo4 (except perhaps the 996 turbo )

There is a company in Wembley Trading Estate [can't remember the name] which deal in
Porsche including servicing and preparing for track/race antics.
I had a talk with them about buying and running a GT4.
They were of the opinion you might have more fun in a RWD porker.
They will also thoroughly inspect any Porsche you are interested in buying, this price is redeemable against your first service if you use them.
I'll take you there [or you could ask Whoopi] if you want.

I am so grateful for all the responses, I had no idea there were so many helpful people on board! Thanks a lot all.
I have decided that if I was to go ahead with this (which looks likely), I would go for a left hooker. There is no way I could afford a 50k car now, which is what Porsche main dealers are asking I reckon that I could find a decent left hooker for about 30-35k.
Re. servicing, I will/do service the Mak about 4 times a year. At £300 a shot, we are well over a £1200 per year on servicing alone. When it comes to looking after my car, I am meticulous, as I am sure we all are. No expense is ever spared. If I do a track day, my car is serviced before <B>and</B> after! I have even applied armour-fend twice! Fuel consumption is also on the lean side, so I am used to all that. Its the cheap Japanese feel that I am getting tired of, with the odd rattle and the headache after a long journey.
I think the little things will make the difference, like tyres, insurance and a new exhaust.
I will give Harry a call and see if he has sold his. I'm sure that I can trust them to sell a decent car on to me. But it's black, right? Eww.

If you are interested in a LHD version have a look at the classifieds in EVO. There is a company there who are specialists in LHD imports and always have Porsche Turbos on offer. Sorry I can't remember their name but I'm sure you can find it in EVO easily enough.

His experiences are enough to make anyone stop and think, as he encountered a mass of expensive and painful problems.
The car was a German import, 3.8 Turbo, upped to 380-400bhp, bright yellow with a ferociously expensive exhaust.
Looked the nadgers, (if you like yellow Porsches), but it cost them about £10K for less than 10,000 miles.
