Default Stereo in cs400

Took my car in yesterday to have the standard stereo ( not very good) changed for a kenwood nav/cd .It was supplied, recommended and fitted by a car hifi specialist.Unfortunately they could not get the steering wheel controls to work with the Kenwood unit, different protocols in canbus wiring ( cs400 different to sti apparently) apparently. Does this sound right?

No its not right, the canbus network on the cs 400 is the same as all-ready fitted to the 08 sti onwards, some units that control the steering wheel functions have to be setup I.E press and hold certain buttons for a preset length of time, others are just plug and play but can be a little vague

Rob you should be head technician @ HQ with the amount of stuff you know. If every Subaru service centre had people like you there I wouldn't mind taking my car and paying main dealer service prices! I've been to a few and only wish someone like you was working there.

I am currently waiting for a part from one Subaru service centre on advertise on here it's been 5 months and I've not heard back not to mention the two months before that taking the car back and forth.

I'll find out the part you need that we use when fitting aftermarket units in the 08 sti onwards once I return to work.

It plugs into the original wiring and has a control module in the middle of it, which links the steering controls to the Headunit, been using clarion & pioneer units with it so I assume it should work with the Kenwood too.

There is video on this webpage shows what I mean about programming certain interfaces

Yeah, I'll second that.
Rob is invaluable to the hatch community.

I am waiting for a steering wheel angle sensor for my R205, they have reset it a few times and it works fine for a while then the dccd light flashes, hill start light and traction light come on. Apparently it is a common fault on the hatch's and has happened to a few UK cars to. They updated it with the software (thats what I am told, but to no avail.)

The only instances I've seen on a uk hatch up to press is when the owner has fitted a spec c quick rack. The car then thinks its turning to fast for the speed your doing so the VDC control kicks in causing it to brake the wheels.

The software cant be update on the VDC for the steering angle sensor unless you've had a new control module fitted as its a one shot only kinda unit (programmed for life)

All they basically do on the reset is just reset the fault code, Reset the steering angle to zero and reset the yaw sensor to zero too.

The parts for a imported car even though they have to come from Japan should only take around 3-4 weeks to appear not 5 months..

I upgraded mine (well the dealer did so) and the steering wheel controls work for sure - they can sometimes be a bit slow at responding to the iphone connected, but they do work for sure.

I'd agree that the speakers seem fine - guess adding some sound proofing to the doors might improve the bass, but will add weight to the car!

I went for the Pioneer F30BT - nice big screen, good Ipod connection (but you do have to have their special cable for it to work) and pretty easy to use. Fits in well into the dash, and seems to go well with the interior of the car. I had that fitted by the dealer when I bought it.

Reminds me - post pic of the reverse camera! - i'm not in the Cosworth today, but i'll take a shot when I get home tonight
