What's it Worth?
Looking at an Sti with PPP on a 55 plate (blob) with 45k miles. Needs tax, service and MOT. What would be a reasonable offer for such a car? Thanks

Has the cambelt been done? what history comes with it?
Reason i ask is, if not then it's a major service as in all belts fluids ect, and it's overdue by 5k miles which is not a good sign.
What condition are tyres and brakes in? does the rear shock knock?
If your not careful you could end up with a £2/3k bill if none of the above has been done recently.

For cambelt service your looking at circa £500 from a specialist if done correctly, also depends what belt you put on, i'd go with a cosworth but thats just me, you want tensioner and idlers, most people would also stick at least a new water pump on and some would do the oil pump and thermostat as well, which are extra, it is the belt and braces approach.
I'd be doing the plugs, engine oil,air filter, all transmission fluids and possibly the brake fluid as well, some say the maf sensors have a life of around 50k miles as well.
Possibly the pads and discs are worn as well, so they may need changing as i said above which is another £400 dependant on pad and disc choice, and then if it's close to a set of tyres, at ish £400 what looks like a bargin may turn out to be quite expensive if you have not factored all of this into your offer.
All of this depends on how much you can do yourself, the best thing you can do is find out exactly what it needs, then speak to one or two of the recommended specialists on here.

Cheers above! I am no mechanic so spoke to my local dealer who was pretty helpful. Timing belt and service £450 inc. He said sometimes they have to changer the tensioner at £220 inc. but very rare he said it depended on whether they were leaking?

No not sorted anything , been way to busy
Thinking of using it as a engine test hack , been looking at bodyshells , quite possible I'm gonna do all the mods then chuck it all in a nice new shell and do it how I want rather than mess around
You know how it is
Sorry for the slight hijack

Don't get me started, long story that involves kids, money and the damn dog! I am about to part exchange the Hatch for a Bus but want to keep my foot in a Scooby as the Bus is slower than the slugs in my garden so if you know of a good one that nicely sneaks under the government's road tax stealing scheme please let me know. Will thoroughly miss the car so please don't mention 'that' car again.

Right saw a 2005 sti with PPP over the weekend with 40k on the clock. Only dent is the wheel arch where it looks like the seat belt has had the door closed on it. Few little scratches particularly around the door handles and a few scrapes on the side skirts and the rear bumper on the wheel arches. Inside centre console is all scratched to hell and the blue parts of the seat feel rough / thin. Car needs tax, mot and the timing belt doing. Alloys are pickling a bit and the rear window has had a tint put on which is now coming off and has been stuck over the rear window element someone said you may need to replace the whole rear window? Looking for a bit of a cosmetic project so happy to do all the bits just wanted to check the price and is the rear window a nightmare? Been offered the car at £7250 what do people think? Thanks

I'd be tempted to walk away, if the bits you can see have been treated like that then what has the rest of the car been put through, doesn't sound as though anyone has loved it to me and by the time you have spent the time and money on it, you may as well spend a bit extra on a sweet one.
With that lot taken into account i'd say it's £1k more than i would want to pay, because you really want to be doing just about everything i put in my previous post, re fluids ect.
But if it's a project your after and you can get the price down a bit more, then it may be worth a punt as it's mostly cosmetic, these are pretty strong engines and as long as it's all good now then there is no reason to think it won't be in the future.
choices, choices.

Assuming you've not tried already , and you think it may have potential

What would you consider a silly offer? I was told before I went they wouldn't accept anything less than £7500 (up at £8500) but have now said they would accept £7250. It is the last of the blobs and good mileage. I don't mind spraying up the plastic bits and would hope a professional polisher would get the car back to a good finish. The console stuff you can replace from subaru. The seats worried me and if I had to replace the rear window with the heater how much would that cost? The problem is I am use to new so don't know what to expect in terms of what is acceptable for a 7 year old car. Now have the bus just want a small easy project for me to play about with.
Do not rush into it though mate , but if you decide maybe this is the car , go for it but hit em hard , what's the worse they can say

Looks like that general opinion is walk away ,
I'm not gonna disagree but it's got to depend on price as well
If the op can hammer the price down , like ditchy said , it may be worth a punt
But by the sounds of the car I'd take the p and offer 4.5/5k and then go home keep looking and if they ring back maybe strike a deal , nothing lost at all

If your not so desperate to get your hands on one, then just make a silly offer like toneh said, i'd go a bit higher than 4.5k though,i'd call and tell them you have the cash waiting at £6200 then see what they come back with,
nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Thing is if you get it at £7250 then spend a grand it's not a cheap car,ok you'll know it's all been done and not due again for a while, i also did not see you mention the brakes disc's and pads, what condition are the tyres in also and what make are they.

£6200 !, Id want a house for that
I purchased a car a few years ago ( not gonna say what cuz I've had comments about it before)
Going price at the time was around 15 k
The guy advertised it for quick sale at 10k
I walked away with it for £7650
I tried lower but he actually told me to f off , so I had to apologise and give him the 7.5k
The reason was ,he was up to his eyeballs in debt his mrs was expecting and the house was at risk
Now his situation was awfull (wouldnt wish it on anyone ) and I genuinely went away feeling guilty , but it shows wait around and right place right time and you can bag a good bargain

Lol at lingalongs, it's like riding a 3 legged horse in your car.
Just done a quick search on auto trader and found a wide track sti ppp, just had cambelt and waterpump done 56k for £6980, a few more miles, but 1k less than this will stand you at when finished, and no mention of dodgy seats, who knows they may take 6.5k for cash.
So if a trader is selling at that, then one would assume there is a few quid profit at that, so maybe £6200 not such a low offer for a tatty car.
