Default Closed block?

Hi,

Just been reading a thread on if a guy has a WRX or a WRX STi.

Must ask, what is meant by a "Closed engine block"
I'm very curious?!!

It's a stronger type of block with more reinforcing around the water jacket area. You can also get semi closed.

If you have a uk hawkeye STi it will be a semi closed deck block. I think the WRX ej255 engines are open deck.

Here is the info from scooby projects, says mine is an EJ257 ?

Applied Model Code
Model(s) Impreza
Body Style 4-Door Sedan (Second Generation / New Age — Revision F, “Hawk Eye”)
Engine Type EJ257
Engine Specification 2457cc, Horizontal opposition 4-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC, Turbo (280ps)
Transmission
Suspension
Production Period June 2005 – May 2006
Market General and European (Right-Hand Drive)
Notes

My applied model code is GDFFKJH, it didn't copy and paste for some reason.
I also see it doesn't mention STi anywhere??!!

I have an 07/07 WRX STi (he says lol) Spec D.

Ah, actually I guess the 280ps bit confirms it's an STi ?

You dont need to worry about the type of block really, thats not what counts for 99% of the time, if you wanted over 500bhp then you would consider knowing which block you had, all you have to worry about is the chocolate pistons that the 2.5's run (well chocolate engines ).
As a 2.5 owner, you need to keep checking the oil regulary (not too bad for us 2ltr owners ), any excessive useage (ie 1ltr per 250miles) and its not a good sign, so a small ammount of useage is common on 2.5's, also keep an eye on the water levels, they are not too bad an engine, just not the best that subaru ever made, if you tune it you have to be careful and make sure you stick with the 99+ ron fuels (shell vpower/tesco momentum).

Do you think running my standard WRX STi Spec D 2.5 on 97 RON for the last 1,600 miles has done any harm?

The car has done about 24k now.

They prefer higher rather than lower octane, best to stick with the 2 (shell/tesco) mentioned fuels

a few soobs have cdb s late 05 blobs have them aswell but tonys totally right the reason youd want a cdb when running above 500bhp is the liners start moving around but under 500bhp they wont move anyway

errm, every otto cycle internal combustion engine. The liner is what the piston goes up and down in. Or have i mis-understood your question?

sorry yes you have. some blocks on high power builds have strengthening liners inside the cylinders. this is what i was taking about. In the previous post the poster talked about the liners moving. does he mean the cylinder actually "warps"? i know strengthening liners can drop making the block useless.

no when deck is open the liners can move under the massive pressure ie warp you can get better liners like dratons but most people get the block pinned to support the liners or the more expensive route is to have cnc cut inserts in the openings technically closing the deck

Only really happens to the 2.5's due to the lack of material between the cylnders, 2ltr's dont really have that problem and you need to do a little more to make it a cdb, some pictures somewhere of all 3 types of blocks, even with liners its not going to make a cdb, but the liners (even pinned) can move (its happened to a few people with higher powered builds), hence why most like going the 2.33/2.35 92.2ltr cdb block) build
