Closed block?
Hi,
Just been reading a thread on if a guy has a WRX or a WRX STi.
Must ask, what is meant by a "Closed engine block"
I'm very curious?!!

You dont need to worry about the type of block really, thats not what counts for 99% of the time, if you wanted over 500bhp then you would consider knowing which block you had, all you have to worry about is the chocolate pistons that the 2.5's run (well chocolate engines ).
As a 2.5 owner, you need to keep checking the oil regulary (not too bad for us 2ltr owners ), any excessive useage (ie 1ltr per 250miles) and its not a good sign, so a small ammount of useage is common on 2.5's, also keep an eye on the water levels, they are not too bad an engine, just not the best that subaru ever made, if you tune it you have to be careful and make sure you stick with the 99+ ron fuels (shell vpower/tesco momentum).

Do you think running my standard WRX STi Spec D 2.5 on 97 RON for the last 1,600 miles has done any harm?
The car has done about 24k now.

a few soobs have cdb s late 05 blobs have them aswell but tonys totally right the reason youd want a cdb when running above 500bhp is the liners start moving around but under 500bhp they wont move anyway

sorry yes you have. some blocks on high power builds have strengthening liners inside the cylinders. this is what i was taking about. In the previous post the poster talked about the liners moving. does he mean the cylinder actually "warps"? i know strengthening liners can drop making the block useless.

lol when doing my build was told to get a cdb and was given a list of block types
it says late 05 sti blobs just before upgrade to 2.5 hawkeyes were closed decked i mean i havent got one like but thats what i was told
and yes earlier blobs were semi closed deck blocks
but i could just be miss informed

no when deck is open the liners can move under the massive pressure ie warp you can get better liners like dratons but most people get the block pinned to support the liners or the more expensive route is to have cnc cut inserts in the openings technically closing the deck
