the mechinic who works for me pocked around somewhere with his camera and he "thinks" its a cdb
LOL.....
Did he also 'think' it was an STI ???
Take it to someone who knows what they are looking at. An easy spot (but not always the case) is to check for cross hatching marks near the starter motor.
In that case it is a STi (the 6th digit "E" denotes that).
You have a 280PS (276bhp) WRX STi Version III 4-dr saloon, manual 5-sp.
Does it also have the 'oval STi' badges on the front wings? (No 'guarantee' as anyone in the know could fit them, but is also a useful pointer nonetheless).
I've read a thread on here which showed pics of CDB's without any cross hatching. The only real way to be 100% certain is to open it up.
But, as you say if you can see cross hatching then you can pretty much be certain it's a CDB.
According to API Dave, outwardly, the ONLY unique thing to a CDB is indeed the x-hatching......... But ONLY the x-hatching around the oil filter housing.

Correct Joz....also lines across the starter motor housing.
