Was it an import mate? Look on the log book or do some research on the ecu as theres a different ecu for each spec as far as i know

On the passenger suspension turret there's the ally VIN plate riveted to it.... On it is a 7-digit "Applied model code"... Post it up...

WRX.

Won't have a CDB unless it's been changed. What makes you think it has a CDB ?

LOL.....
Did he also 'think' it was an STI ???

Take it to someone who knows what they are looking at. An easy spot (but not always the case) is to check for cross hatching marks near the starter motor.

In that case it is a STi (the 6th digit "E" denotes that).

You have a 280PS (276bhp) WRX STi Version III 4-dr saloon, manual 5-sp.

Does it also have the 'oval STi' badges on the front wings? (No 'guarantee' as anyone in the know could fit them, but is also a useful pointer nonetheless).

Its' STI v3 then!

And I wouldn't think it came with closed deck..
Only the early RA had ones.

The easiest way to recognise if you have a cdb is the cross-hatch on the block
under the alternator and behind the crankshaft position sensor.

CDB faded out in 95 but a few scraped few into the STI v2's.

I've read a thread on here which showed pics of CDB's without any cross hatching. The only real way to be 100% certain is to open it up.
But, as you say if you can see cross hatching then you can pretty much be certain it's a CDB.

I wouldn't worry.

At least you bought a WRX which turned out to be an STI, we usually see it the other way round.

According to API Dave, outwardly, the ONLY unique thing to a CDB is indeed the x-hatching......... But ONLY the x-hatching around the oil filter housing.
