General rule of thumb is 330 however you should judge each car on its own merits.
Some **** themselves at 300 and some run sweet at 380.

Impossible to say what is and what's not safe power.

I wouldn't want to push a standard 15 year old Impreza engine anywhere above 330bhp, unless ofcourse you can afford to fix it 'when' it decides it's had enough.

For every one that runs sweet at 350+ there are a handful parked up with broken engines and gear boxes.

That's the critical point that many people forget.
These engines cost £3000 for a decent rebuild.
Once they go, there is no turning back.

My old V4 sti ran fine with me for 20k. It was running around 310bhp (standard but with a decat exhaust) on standard map. I sold it with around 70k on the clock. It ran find until the new owner fitted a bigger turbo/injectors/new ecu/front mount etc.
Within a week it spun a shell.
So he spent £3000 'improving' it, then it went bang.

Be very careful.
On the road, these cars are fast enough in standard form.
It's only ***** wavers down the pub that feel the need to spunk a few thousand on the credit card, just so that they can be noticed just that little bit more!

I'll get me coat!

You would be asking for trouble bolting a 20G onto a standard V4 engine unless you ran it with **** all boost, but then there's no point.

Spend the money improving your car in other areas. A great brake and suspension setup is worth more than the 50bhp a 20G will give you.
