Default Looking at buying a blob

I used to own a v4 STI, chose to get a bike over another one but every time I see a scoob purr past me I get withdrawal symptoms

Just wondered what the limit is roughly on a standard blob eye STI bottom end, I know the gearbox should be ok with a decent clutch

This is an arguable answer as many will tell you different from others, but 400bhp appears to be the norm. Some would argue 450bhp is the threshold, and yet some have run up to 500bhp with no or little issues.

Dont forget that its not just the bottom end thats under strain at that level, and how would you support the car for the "said" power has to be decided very carefully.

I personally think its very difficult to give an accurate answer to that, I've heard of newage STI's giving up in little more than standard trim but then I know of at least 2 guys on here who ran over 500bhp.
You need to judge each car on its own merits, every engine has been treated differently throughout its life and this treatment has a major factor in how much and how long they can withstand 'X' amount of power.
But as above, the general rule of thumb is 400bhp on a good engine.
