Default Maybe a dumb question but.......

Does the size of the tail pipe coming out the backbox make any difference to how loud the car is?
Reason i ask is that i had a spare backbox, took it to work, cut a hole in it, ripped all the wadding out of it then welded it back up, spent 2 minutes putting it on purely for the fun factor when i started it up and scared the missus to death but it backfired as it was quieter than the one i took off.
Both 3" in to the box but the loud one has a 5" tail pipe with the wadding still in it and the empty one has a 3" tail pipe.
Just wondered if it resignated any different being bigger or smaller to make it louder or quieter?

cheers guys

The bigger the tail pipe exiting the backbox the louder the sound.
It also depends on what the silencer itself is like.
