Default engine numbers...

i have a late 96/97 wrx impreza import and wondered how many numbers make up the engine number? [as i have located a 6 digit number, with no letters at all], if this is correct then how can i use this information to get a bhp for this engine? to the best of my very limited knowledge the car's running standard and all the vin plate numbers check out and various sites are quoting that it is a 280bhp engine from factory. i have looked everywhere but cat seem to find a site that i can input the engine number to get clarity on this.... also if the only true way to get this info is to rr it then any ideas who's the best to do this in the Glasgow area?...... many thanks in advance for any help guys.......

280PS from the factory chap which equates to 276bhp.
Two things worth thinking about though...

1. That power was quoted when it was new, it's now getting on a bit so may well of lost a few ponies since then.
2. 280PS was the max any company could quote due to some pathetic Japanese law.

Can't help you with any RR in Glasgow but I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction. Very good idea having it done to make sure it's all running as it should.
