I viewed a scoob recently for my mate and picked this up - it shocked me because i thought the owner had been hacking the rear bumper for some reason....that is until i got home and checked my bug and it was the same !

Basic science:
steel = iron mainly. (+ some carbon etc)
rust = iron as above + oxygen....it actually weighs more
Don't tell me you never did the test at school with magnesium ribbon?
