Quieter exhaust backbox?
The previous owner fitted a Sportex back box and pipe to my turbo wagon don’t think it’s a full system since I can still see the cats starting from the driver’s seat area of the car forward. I think it’s this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sportex-Subaru-Impreza-2-0i-turbo-performance-exhaust-system-2001-2005-/280628907557?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM& hash=item4156c94e25
Problem is I’m no boy racer and as a more mature driver looking for something a bit quieter especially when the early morning starts for work. Also with it being mild steel I don’t see it lasting a long time since the pipe is already corroded.
I read if I replace the whole system removing all the Cats by putting in a HKS Silent Flow for example it will increase the noise where I’m after a quieter life. The car is standard UK 2000 turbo wagon other that the lowerd suspension and annoying exhaust so what would people suggest?

I did think about that but it would be another mild steel exhaust. I’m really looking for something in stainless steel that sounds subtle and sporty but not too loud.

Mate I asked the exact same question when I first bought my car. I was looking to make it much quieter but, I've now got used the the growl and actually quite like it. I suggest waiting for the weather to warm up and then going for a blast with your windows open...it may just change your mind!!

That one on Ebay is standard mild steel. Plenty of folk have these sitting about in there garages and worth no more than the current price TBH.
If you don't mind mild steel you can also fit a newage STI7/8 back box to your existing system which has a nice single exit - You just won't be able to use the middle hanger on a newage backbox.
If you want stainless steel, a nicer tail pipe and quiet then the only and best option is a prodrive performance backbox. They come up for sale from time to time for about £100.
Failing that next inline which is a little noiser would be a TSL group N backbox, or a Magnex Backbox.
In order of noise level and none of them are really noisey.
OEM mild steel pee shooter.
OEM mild Steel STI7/8 single exit
Stainless Prodrive
Stainless TSL Group N and Magnex on Par with each other.

Thanks for the advice folks. Must admit i do like the look of this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2208055021...84.m1423.l2649
Since prefur the twin tail pipe look if i'm honest but dont want the low bass noise i get from the Sportex fitted.
Out of interest what new gaskit and bolts will i need to put the back box on and wheres the chepest place to buy them?

Revolution are sporty (on full chat) but quiet (bit of a rumble) on tickover or cruise.

Looks like I didn’t win the standard back box it went for £51 in the end.
Don’t get me wrong I like a sporty exhaust and used to have a full SS Mongoose system on the MR2 and loved the sound but the Sportex that came fitted with the 4" Pipe has an annoying low frequency drone then reverberates through the cabin of the car giving you a pounding head ached and you have to shout at your passengers to hear you.
A friend suggested putting a muffler end cap on it?
