Default Import Number Plate

Afternoon lads / ladesses,

Got a classic import STI, but the plate at the back is HUGE!

It has standard size lettering but as I say, mahoosive. Any advise on where to go for one that is written over 2 lines? and more of a square?

Not sure what size will fit in the recess and dont want to go throwing money at future wall art...

Any pointers?

The offending yellowness...

Just fit a standard uk sized rear plate. Look far better than a square plate.

Always been 406 has mine buddy. Yes the spoiler is carbon, think it looks really good against the silver, bonnet would be fit but expencive job... worth it I rec

Not sure on square or standard, I think either would look better than as it is, but seen a square on a type-r before and loved it... hmm

What's the law on import plates, as I think you can have smaller lettering than normal uk plates, as thinking of a smaller front plate on my jdm newage, but unsure if legal or not was hoping a 3/4 plate with motor bike sized letters would be ok

Imports can run motorcycle font, and size.

Not correct, you need to read the proper specs to which import can run which plate, for example a car imported to the UK in 1993 (call it an my93) can run an import type plate but the same my93 car imported in 2000 cannot, the law changed for all imports no matter what year, in 1999.

The Road Vehicles ( Display of Registration Marks) (Amendment) regulations 2002 SI no. 2687 came into force in November 2002.

These amendment regulations introduce a new regulation 14A, making special provision in relation to the size and spacing of characters in the registration number of some imported vehicles. These regulations also include the display of motorcycle sizes number plates on imported vehicles. The provision only applies to vehicles imported into the UK which do not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval, and are so constructed, that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the plate of a registration number in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14.

Also contained is an amendment to regulation 3, to prohibit the use of a number plate on which the background is patterned or textured, or gives that appearance.

Where a vehicle has been allocated a UK registration number, the number plate must comply with the specification and standards laid out in the Road Vehicles ( Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, as amended. Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display numberplates with smaller characters if the vehicle does not have European Community Vehicle Type Approval and the vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size numberplates.

The dimensions for the smaller sized plate are:

• each character in the registration number must be 64mm high
the width of each character of the number, other than the letter 'I' and the figure '1' must be 44mm

• the width of every part of the stroke forming a character in a number must be 10mm
the spacing between any two characters within a group must be 10mm

• the vertical spacing between groups of characters must be 5mm

• the width of a margin between the number and the top and lateral sides of the numberplate must be not less than 5mm

• the space between the bottom of the number/character and the bottom of the plate must not be less than 13mm, but within that space, the space between the bottom of the number and the top of the name and postcode of the person the plate was supplied must not be less than 5mm.

Seeing as JDM cars do not have European Type approval, and are different to the European cars due to not having to be built to that law. So regardless of the changes in 2001, JDM imports do not require a standard UK plates.

Been pulled by a Vosa trained police officer as he just wanted to see my car, and he said straight away "I hope this is an import sir, as that is too small for a UK car" to which I said "Imported in 2004, from Japan", to which he replied "cool" then just chatted about cars, as he had an Evo and didn`t understand why people would buy a Scooby, so I tried to educate him.

Still not correct, one of the reasons we had sva/esva type approval, hence cars imported before 1999 can have import plates and those after cannot.
You should also note where it says (or words there of) "if a standard plate can be fitted then it has to be fitted", which they can be without any modifications.

Can`t find anywhere that uses that 1999 date, and I`ve had a chat with a few traffic cops 2 of which were Vosa trained and none of them said anything about it.

SVA test is detailed here again no reference.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...cle/DG_4022106

Mot testers manual states this.

And that is such a grey area it means that Import cars, can run the motorcycle font on an import plate and they will NOT bother you. As long as the plate has the BSAU number and the makers details, along with the correct font/size (motorcycle) you will never have a problem.

I have it on my works pc, will post it up tomorrow, clearly states about import plates, also that if a standard plate can be fitted then it MUST be fitted.
There are certain categories where import plates can be used, for example american cars, which have different plate holders, cars that can only have motorcycle style plates due to their plate holder etc, very informative, no grey area's, just area's that are not known about enough by the relevent authorities

If there is room for a normal size plate then one must be used. If the cars design does not allow for a UK sized plate then smaller plates can be used.

i've been lucky then, my classic was imported in 2006 and there is clearly room for a normal rear sized number plate but I have a square one, either that or the police up here don't know it's wrong.

I think this has worked... regardless of law, I think this looks the nuts!

The paint under the old plate was somewhat distorted so I primered and painted the recess the same colour of the alloys to give a 'diffuser' type look!

Me thinks it works, white light LED bulbs for the plate now and shes done

You can have square plates, so long as the text is standard legal size, taxis and Police Interceptor Subarus are a prime example,

It won't be part of the bumper mate.

Jack it up and have another look. Get it removed and use your rear cluster.
Reckon I'd paint that recess the same colour as the car as well but that's just me.

Good info, nice one pal.

Will be under it again this weekend anyway as I have a rattle that is doing my noggin in! With regards the recess, I have only just sprayed it to match the wheels! damn! When I took the old plate off the plastic below was a bit off coloured and no compounding was sorting it, it was also scratched around where the plate had been rubbing. So, l had some paint left from the wheels so went for it... looks a bit better in 'real life'
