Forged, it will be OK to 400.
After that, you shorten it's life.

To do it properly you will be looking at:-

Simtek £1200
Full rebuild £3000
Gearbox (6 speed) £2500 (5 speed ppg/scoobyclinc) £3-5000
Clutch £600+
Uprated turbo, a good top end new turbo will be £1600-2000, 2nd hand cheap n cheerful £600 (will affect the way the power comes in)
Uprated front brakes, £800
Bigger wheels for front brakes £400+tyres
Injectors (650cc) probably new and probably another 3-500 quid

Over 9k there and its not everything either, hence why people buy a £6000 new age STI and modify that.

If you are doing a full rebuild then you replace everything including the crank.
Standard subaru one is ok but the twin scroll one is better.

As Tony says, it is very expensive to build a 400bhp classic from scratch. And please don't think he is being over the top with his prices, he's pretty much bang on there. If anything I'd increase that number a bit for a good solid build.
You ODB will be fine at 400 with the right bits but If you decide to go ahead with a complete build then you may as well go with a CDB or SCDB for that added piece of mind.

In theory your ODB will handle that power, but after my CDB blew it's gaskets & spewed all it's antifreeze down my NS wing after 2500 miles on a fully forged no expense spared build
I'd build the engine to the highest possible spec using the best parts. Believe me you will feel physically I'll when it goes **** up in a couple of thousand miles.

Well the parts will still set you back between 1500-2k depending on what you get, the crank should be known as a cross drilled/nitrided crank, its the twin scroll crank, no other subaru has this.

Whines a bit on the move, liked the sound in my old classic. Strong gearbox albeit many also go for the 6 speed from a newage.

I think scoobyclinics is a similar price but stronger than the PPG gearset, a better option really, you need to add a good 1000 quid to that price to have the box built.

It can but for how long? for 400bhp you need to get rid of every mod you have or upgrade every mod you have Once you have done that you can probably run close to 400 bhp.

Mods in an early car cost a fortune due to needing everything

Be a lot cheaper to just buy a newage and mod it!

As per PM.

Build a 2.1 in a CDB. If you're considering spending that sort of money on the car then a ODB or SCDB shouldn't even be an option tbh. If you're going to do it, do it once and do it right.

And apply for a few more credit cards cos it wont be cheap.

Just read the whole thread.

If all you want is 400hp then tbh its not worth the money it'll cost you to get there. You'd be better off buying a classic thats already sorted to those levels or a newage. Be a lot cheaper.

You put enough power through a block for long enough and most will fail eventually. Fact. All you can do to give yourself the best chance of having a strong engine is use a good base. i.e a CDB.

I honestly think you need to do A LOT more research before you go spending any money. Not being disrespectful, just offering advice and trying to save you a lot of headaches and cash.
