Ive tried everything, and quite frankly ANY bass at all and it sounds like im listening to the music in a fish tank underwater, infact i have to have the bass on -4/-5 just for the sound to come out clearly, it's shockingly bad and ive had some BAD stereos, is this normal for the subaru and if so what needs upgrading?

Pretty normal. You really need to change everything lol, but i'd start with speakers.

I've recently added an active sub I bought off ebay, it's an Alpine unit, makes a massive difference.
